Cushing (photo at right). The BOA consists of the of- ficers of the Florida Society, the immediate past governor, the General Society DGG and AG, 3 directors-at-large and the 16 colony governors. Under the Florida Society’s bylaws, the BOA “has general charge of the affairs of the Society.” Present were 10 of the 11 state officers, 1 of the 2 General Society officers, representatives from 13 of the 16 colonies, and 10 of the 13 appointed state committee chairs. The meeting was called to order by Gover- nor Cushing promptly at 9am. Elder Jean Albrecht offered the invocation and Captain Jim Preston led the pledge of allegiance to the US flag and the salute to the Mayflower Society flag. He also read The Mayflower Compact. Governor Cushing an- nounced that Laura Farmer of the Warren Colony had ten- dered her resignation as State Director and that the BOA had voted to appoint George A. Lockhart, also of the Warren Colony, to fill her unexpired term. George was warmly wel- comed to the BOA. Governor Cushing also announced that past FSMD Governor and current AG Robby Burt has re- L to r: Clara Waterman Powell, Nancy Fodi, Ruth Ann Fay, Blythe Thomas signed as AG due to his and his wife Trudy’s imminent (partially obscured), Jean Harden and Fran Lopus stand in respect at the reading of The Mayflower Compact. (continued on pg. 14) 3 FLORIDA SOCIETY CELEBRATES 75th ANNIVERSARY OF ITS CHARTER WITH LIMITED EDITION COMMEMORATIVE COIN The Florida Society was chartered 31 July 1937 as the 28th state society organized under the General Society of Mayflower De- scendants (“GSMD”) and, thus, will observe its 75th birthday this summer. To honor and memorialize this once-in-a-lifetime spe- cial occasion, the Florida Society’s Board of Assistants has commissioned SymbolArts of Ogden, Utah, to mint a limited edition commemorative coin (pictured below). Details for ordering are given below. According to the history published by GSMD in 1999, attempts to organize a state society in Florida began in 1933 but were postponed because of the Great Depression gripping the country at the time. Spearheading the organizing efforts were Mrs. Harold C. R. Wall of Miami, GSMD Secretary General Harold G. Murray, and Edward B. Alling, a member of the Massachusetts Society and President of First State Bank in DeLand. Early in 1937, a solicitation went out to 40 Mayflow- er descendants living in Florida to sign a petition for a state society charter and 24 qualified signatures were obtained. Mrs. Wall declined the honor of being the Actual size: 1 1/2 inch diameter official sponsor, stating it was her firm belief that the sponsor should be a man, so Mr. Alling accepted that role. Mrs. Wall did receive the honor of being as- signed membership number FL #1. The charter was granted 31 July 1937 with 24 charter members, 9 of whom were new members of the General Society and 15 of whom were members of sister state societies.
