It includes older titles which have long since ceased publication as well is those still being published. The scoPe of the guide is broad, including literary, political, and historical journals as well as general newspapers of the black community, and represents all phases of black thought and action:from the Abolitionists of the nine- teenth century to the ciVil rights and black-nationalist movements of the 1960's and 1970's. Prepared in response to the requests of faculty and students who found that effectively utilizing our dispersed, though rich, resources was difficult, we hope that this guide will facilitate use of our collections by scholars locally as well as nationally. It is, we believe, a guide to one of the strongest collections in this field. The arrangement of the main listing is.alphabetical. An explanation of the standard entry format follows: 2 3 1Western Cyclone. Nicodemus, Kansas, May 13, 1886-Dec. 1 , 1887// 4(Black newspaper) 5 Hist 6May 13, 1886-Dec. 16, 1887. -1. After the main alphabetical listing is a geographic index which organize all titles by place of publication. Following this geographic index is a selective subject index. The subject index does not include all titles in the compilation but should be of use to persons seeking examples of black publications .,:fn;Ilbjects such as education and Pan-Africanism. 1. This guide could not have been compiled without the invaluable assistance of other librarians who shared with us information on holdings in their collections: Louise Henning (Kohler Art Library), Marilyn Hicks (Business School Library), Miriam Allman (Center for HealthSciences Library), Dotti Delfino (College Library), Heidi Klasna (U. W. Law School Library), Pamela Berlin (Mills Music Library), Audrey Orr (Library School Library), Colin Cameron (Social Science Graduate Reference Room), and Thurston Davini (School of Social Work Library). The compiiers are grateful for their willingness to make this list as complete as it is. Since .we plan to update it periodically, we would like to encourage anyone with commentsor suggestions to send them to the compilers. Susan Bryl 7 Erwin K.
