It is a charity run entirely by dedicated volunteers from the local community. We are self–supporting and reliant upon interest, goodwill and generosity for the continued success of our Festival. The participation is tremendous with typically more than 2000 performers of all ages, abilities and backgrounds joining our Festival each year. During the week of the Festival we enjoy and appreciate the use of many venues throughout the village. It is an uplifting experience to behold for all those who perform, attend and organise the event. OUR AIMS: • To celebrate and enjoy the variety of music, speech and drama shown by all those who take part in our Festival • To nurture all participants irrespective of ability or background and help them to enjoy a wonderful, welcoming experience to help them grow in self-confidence • To highlight excellence and achievement by having a public Festival to which professional adjudicators bring expertise, guidance and an educational aspect to the performers • To develop strong, long-lasting relationships with our greatly appreciated patrons, sponsors, educational establishments, the community and Friends of the Festival • To ensure an ethos of understanding, appreciation and friendship in addition to passing on a set of values to generations ahead so that the Festival in Alderley Edge may continue to develop its historical legacy. The late Mike Barry, who was a Committee member for a short time, contributed the above words. They express our aims and underpin our objectives as we now turn our attention to 2020 and the next Festival in Alderley Edge. We thank Mike for his words and are most grateful for his contribution to the Alderley Edge Festival during his last year. Geoff Hall, Ann Hume Angela Taylor Charity number 500097 The British and International Federation of Festivals, Macclesfield SK11 6UD Twitter: @ aefestival100 Facebook: Alderley Edge Festival 2 2 Chairman’s Message At the beginning of September this year, the North West Championship of Festivals took place in which performers had been nominated by one of the Festivals within the North West Region in speech and drama, vocal, instrumental and dance. In order to be nominated entrants had to have won their respective classes at the highest level possible. So, the Championship was full of young people who had reached Grade 8, some of them with distinction. Each participant had started years before entering their respective festivals in order to give themselves the experience of performing in front of an audience and also by learning from the adjudications that they all would have been given by the professionals who heard their performances. Alderley Edge Festival is very pleased to announce that our nomination in the instrumental category, the cellist Nathanael Horton, took the first prize. What is it that supports each performance? First of all, it is the quality and the quantity of the practice that each performer undertakes. Secondly it is the determination of each player to do as well or better than the performance last year. This year at the Alderley Edge Festival Finale, it was a real pleasure to see those young people who had competed against each other for many years come to support each other in this final concert of the Festival. They had all become firm friends. And so, we encourage as many young people as possible to enter the Alderley Edge Festival, to give themselves the experience of performance and to increase their standard over the years to come and to give themselves and others the pleasure of their playing in so doing. We would like to invite instrumentalists of all types: pianists, string players, brass players, woodwind players and percussion players either individually or else in small or large groups. We would like to invite singers to perform solo or duet also choirs for both children and adult and we would like to invite speech performers: younger children to recite poems, older children to recite Shakespeare, prose reading, drama groups and many other categories. We look forward to hearing you! This year entry to all the classes will be on-line only. Postal entries are now a thing of the past. The deadline for the entries is midnight on Sunday 9th February 2020. Please do not leave it too late to enter because the computerised system will not allow entries beyond the deadline. We look forward to receiving your entry and to hearing your performance. As I am sure you are aware, Festivals do not just happen. There is a great deal of work undertaken by a very dedicated committee and there are many other people who come to help out during Festival Week. If you would like to act as a steward for as little as three hours, we should be delighted to see you. Of course, you could do more if you wished. For those who wish to help, please contact Ali Lees, the Deputy Chairman, at [email protected] who will be thrilled to receive your email. Please note the revised dates of the Alderley Edge Festival are Tuesday 28th April to Saturday 2nd May 2020 due to the change of Bank Holiday in May. In the meantime, keep the entries coming and we look forward to your performances in the 104th Alderley Edge Festival. Jonathan Meadmore Chairman, Alderley Edge Festival 3 3 ALDERLEY EDGE FESTIVAL RULES, PROCEDURES and INFORMATION 2020 These rules and procedures help the smooth running of our Festival.
