Application and mode of operation Precipitation meters as well as rain gauges serve for a simple detection of precipitation. Precipitation striking the surface of the earth in the form of rain, snow, drizzle, sleet, hail etc. is collected by the precipitation meter. There is a sharp-edged ring on the upper part of the meter which has a collecting area of 200 cm². The precipitation which has been collected is led off into the tank to prevent it from evaporating, etc. The measuring cylinder, which is included in the shipment, serves for the simple detection of precipitation height by metering in litres . The measuring cylinder is gradu- ated in mm precipitation volume. All it takes for environmental research P.O. Mounting and operation The instrument should be set up at a site whose distance from neighbouring buildings or trees is equal to the height of these objects. It should be free to- wards the side facing the weather. Attach the complete rain gauge with the enclosed holder (3) to a pole. The pole should be skewed at the top to prevent erroneous measurement data resulting from spray water. When the instrument has been mounted, the collecting ring of the rain gauge should be situated approximately 10 cm above the tip of the pole. The collecting surface should be 1 m above the ground. Now place the instrument in the holder (3) making sure that the container (4) has been inserted into the lower part (1). To measure the amount of precipitation, remove the upper part (2) and pour the precipitation, which has been gathered, from the tank (4) into the measur- ing cylinder (5). The precipitation can be read in mm precipitation height at the scale of the measuring cylinder. To measure snow with the rain gauge, insert a snow cross into the upper part (2) of the rain gauge. This prevents the snow from blowing away. Then simply remove the rain and snow gauge together with the precipitation which has been gathered once a day, replace it with the second instrument (upper part, lower part, snow cross, and tank). Allow the collected precipitation to melt in a moderately warm room. After the melting the upper part is removed for the measurement, and the melting water is poured from the tank into the measuring cylinder. The precipitation can be read in mm precipitation height at the scale of the measuring cylinder. A precipitation height of 1 mm corresponds to a water volume of 1 liter on 1 m² ground surface. 4.
