S Zimbabwe WASH Cluster S Emergency Sitrep – 03 February 2009 Reporting Period: 26th - Jan 2nd Feb, 2009 This report only covers main points and issues regarding WASH matters during the reporting period. Information sent by WASH cluster members by the 3rd of February, 2009 is captured. More detailed reports by each partner may be shared as requested. CHOLERA SITUATION – OVERVIEW for the week · Government of Zimbabwe announced the handover of Water / Sanitation for urban areas from ZINWA to local Government Councils; hopefully the handover will be carried out smoothly, but could present even further challenges in the short term. · National cholera cases increased by 8,578, and deaths increased by 324. Case fatality rate decreased by 0.2.1 · National projected cases were increased by 35,000 - 55,000, as Jan 29th saw the number of Cholera cases breach the 60,000 worst case projections. ISSUES · The current WASH situation in Bulawayo “is a recipe for disaster” and currently UNICEF is facilitating the development of an EPREP to respond to the evolving situation. The 2 water treatment plants have remained operational ensuring the city of continuous clean water supply. · Kadoma/Mashonaland West - MSF Holland Report 01/28/2009 - The heaviest week since the beginning of the outbreak on 14/11/08, a total of 1752 new cases is indicative of contaminated water as the source of infection. The biggest number of patients keeps coming from Rimuka an area with a particularly bad water and sanitation situation. · Beitbridge, Chivi and Chiredzi report high cases, and WASH assessments or activities requested by C4. · Bindura - Still challenges being faced in hygiene education campaigns; DAPP assisting in hygiene promotion; more partners needed to be involved in cholera control activities in Bindura district, and report a lack of purified water; Lack of resources such as transport and the fuel to use, for most vehicles are down and they need maintainance; Lack of communication from camps to commanding centres; Insufficient cholera kits in camps. · Zinwa has not been able to supply water to the hospital and Mutoko growth point since December 2008 due to a ZESA fault. · Mutoko - There are no water storage containers at the hospital CTC and no adequate water as evidenced by heaps of unwashed linen. · Nyanga - Pending NFIs request from UNICEF slowing timely implementation of the community based planned PHHP activities mentioned above. · Gokwe South - There is a gradual increase in re-infection cases, hence the need to disinfect households. · Gokwe North - Lack of support for MoH in staff and logistics- fuel, medicines and staff. ACTIVITIES / INPUTS · GOAL Zimbabwe is undertaking hygiene promotion and distributions activities in Kariba Urban, Karoi Urban & Tengwe area in Hurungwe District. Number of HHs reached is 15,370. · GOAL Zimbabwe is also supporting clean up campaigns/Waste Management in Hatcliffe & DZ (Harare) areas and is in discussions with ZINWA in relation to Drainage/Sewage support. · From 24/01 within 72 hours a CTC with 250 patient capacity was set up in tents, complete water (30,000 liter tank), sanitation (20 latrines), waste management facilities and electricity generation capacity were set up by the MSF-H team in close collaboration with Spanish Red Cross and GAA. · Christian Care – active in Mashonaland - Centenary and Guruve doing WASH activities and supporting CTCs with supplies. · Italian Corperation and CESV – active at Mashonaland’s St Alberts hospital assisting with medical supplies and WASH activities. Page 1 of 5 · International Organisation for Migration – active in Centenary and Mt Darwin. Assist with NFIs, shelter, medical supplies, fuel, food focusing mainly on migrants in border areas. · Kwekwe – Oxfam – Water supply interventions in Tiger Reef mines. · Lower Guruve Dev Association – active in Mbire providing hygiene kits and PHHE in 6 wards. · DAPP – active in Bindura, Guruve and Shamva providing door to door cholera awareness campaigns. Other work in Bindura: Supply of water treating tablets and establishment of boreholes in urban area as well as in farms, Building of toilets for farm employees;. Training TOT from 12 wards Uban and 21 wards of Bindura. · Farm Orphan Support Trust – active in Shamva, Bindura and Mazowe doing awareness, hygiene kits and IEC distribution. · World Vision – active In Rushinga, Mt Darwin, Guruve and Centenary doing long term development programmes as well as responding to the cholera through distribution of medical supplies to CTCs and hospitals, hygiene kits and PHHE in the communities. They are also assisting MOHCW with assessments and surveillance. · Kadoma: IRC: Started installation of latrines, German Red Cross: assessing water situation. GAA Installing 30m3 Tank at CTC. Distributing aqua tab, mobile static ORC. Oxfam GB: Responding with 5,000 NFIs distribution, equipment moved to drill boreholes. UNICEF trucking water to Kadoma. · Harare Urban - Budiriro itself is well catered for with hygiene promotion. Budiriro: 1&3 are covered by Oxfam. 2&4 are covered by GAA. Dzivarasekwa:Oxfam and GAA are doing assessment. · Zvimba - GAA reports assessment has been done in Darwendale, Raffingora, Arda Sisi, Dzivaresekwa and Estensione. GAA is asking for the integration of more partners. · Hwedza - Zimbabwe Red Cross has been helping with transport and health and hygiene promotion · Mutoko - Plan International (medical and logistical supplies, water and sanitation activities) and CRS (NFIs ) are partners working in the district · Mudzi The district is getting support from Spouse net: Health and hygiene promotion, community based surveillance, NFIs distribution – Oxfam: Health and hygiene promotion, NFIs distribution, borehole rehabilitation - World Vision: PHHE, Hygiene promotion campaigns and nursing staff. - Red Cross: Hygiene promotion campaigns – CRS: Hygiene campaigns, food and logistical support. · Nyanga - H&HP - Support MOH to train 103 Village based volunteers for PHHP. Currently disseminating cholera alert flyers and door to door PHHE. · Nyanga - Mercy Corps: Contributed 80 Water Dispensers, 2 Plastic Rolls, 3 Boxes of aqua tabs. · Nyanga - Red Cross International - Canadian (500 Water Makers, 30 Carbolic soap · Chegutu - Concern Worldwide - IEC material and dissemination after M&E has been done on the farms and mines where cases are reoccurring; · Chegutu Urban - Concern Worldwide - On going emptying of septic tanks and jetting of main lines,54 completed to date. · Lupane - Dabane Trust - PHHP to 157 Community Members (83 women and 74 men), Slow Sand Filter Tanks at Households level (40 litres capacity) for 30 households and 1 clinic, IEC Materials - 200 Posters distributed. · Beitbridge - ACF reports water trucking brings around 30m3 per day for the CTC, and 2 other areas around the CTC. PHHP sessions underway in rural areas for 532 persons; Rehabilitation of wells with installation of hand pump in 2 villages complete. · Chipinge – ACF- PHHP sessions with 6 EHT: 26 sessions for 3626 persons to date, distribution of 50 hygiene Kit in 4 locations. · Chivi and Chiredzi - ACF - PHHP sessions in Bikita located in 2 wards (13 VIDCO): 13 sessions for 1,356 persons; Water supply for 3 CTC in Chiredzi (2 sites) and Chivi districts (1 site), with an average of delivery of 5m3 PLANNED ACTIVITES THIS COMING WEEK · CADEC: Plans to conduct PHHP in wards 6,8 &17. · Mashonaland - WFP planning to provide food to CTCs in their operational districts · Mashonaland - WV will support bikes in Rushinga, Mt Darwin, Mbire and Centenary · Mashonaland - WV will put back on the road vehicles in Rushinga, Mt Darwin, Mbire and Centenary. Other partners to consider taking up the other districts. · Chegutu Urban - Zinwa to act on sewerage overspill and water provision in Ward 12 · Gokwe South - Concern Worldwide to train 100 volunteers for Nemangwe 2 and Ngomeni wards where new cases emerged. · Beitbridge - ACF - Need for upscale in PHHP activities (currently 14 volunteers from IOM + 5 EHTs + 1 HP from ACF) Page 2 of 5 NEEDS · Chegutu - Need for 30 NFI kits for targeted distribution to discharged patients · Chegutu Urban - Need for 150 NFI kits for targeted distribution to discharged patients · Gokwe North - NFI's urgently needed, at CTU's for targeted distributions, Aqua tabs with IEC material · Gokwe South - More PHHE training, IEC materials and PHHE kits required § To establish OR centres for inaccessible areas. Currently there 10 established centers in three wards § To identify points along Sesame river bed and establish Sandholes as water points for the community. § For hygiene promotion there is need for NFI kits for every affected household. To date 60 H/H received the kits from Red Cross § Need for Personal protective clothing and Equipment for staff working at Cholera Treatment camps. · Bindura § Transport to strengthen mobility in the district. § Communication radios for cholera camps. § Cholera kits 15 to 20 are needed for the Bindura camps since some are broken · Lupane - Dabane Trust- 636 households at Dongamuzi ward in Lupane district were drinking unsafe water at Nhlangano, Siyaphambili and Mdlankunzi dams.
