Daughter Sarah (b. 1687) died 1740. 1670-1. R.C. fined for attending a Meeting at Chris- topher Birket's. Distress a pair of shoes, a shirt and other things. 1681. Richard C. was imprisoned for 2 | months at Appleby. 1678. R.C. fined for attending a Meeting at Bowness. Distress goods worth 7/-. 1684. R.C. prosecuted under " Popish Recusants" Act. It is difficult to identify the house where Anne Crewdson lived at the time of her death, but the Mill mentioned, which was probably worked by Richard, is identifiable (through the Manorial rent of 2/4d. still payable) as Gilpin Mill a mile or so down the lovely and unspoiled valley which runs from the Wild Boar in Crook (where one of the many last wild Boars in England is said to have been killed) southwards to Crosthwaite. The Will reads as if Anne had lately removed to a smaller house at the Low End of Crook (a mile further south) possibly, having sold the house by the Mill whilst still retaining the Mill. 2-John Crewdson1,2 was born in 1676, died on 25 Apr 1718 in Kendal, Cumbria at age 42, and was buried in FBG Stramongate, Kendal. Yearly rent 13/4). When son Richard is 21 this devised to him with the Workhouses, Stables Backhouses Gardens Crofts etc., subject to payment of 20/- yearly to his Mother during viduity. After expiration of this John to pay to each of three Younger Sons, Bryan Isaac and Jonathan £13. 6. 8. as they attain 21, and Richard to pay to each £10. Provision made in case of death of elder sons during minority for property to descend to their younger brothers. Should any of them refuse to pay the legacies the property to be transferred in Trust to Cousin Thomas Ellwood Junr., of K. Kendal, William Wilson of K.K. Tanner and John Jopson of Laverack-bridge, with power to sell and pay the legacies and pay over balance to two eldest surviving sons. C. was son of Richard and Ann C. of Crook, born 1676. The parentage of John Crewdson has not previously appeared in any pedigree, but has been discovered from these Wills and other research. Rachel Wilson (daughter of Thomas and Rachel, see p. 69) at Kendal 1724. Bryan (1) Elizabeth Seward of Kendal at Kendal, 1731, and (2) Agnes Ashburner, 1748. Jonathan m. Hannah Wilson of Kendal at Kendal 1734. Margaret m. Stephen Field of Fellside Kendal 1742. The Crewdson family of Kendal and Manchester were the children of John and Rachel's son Thomas (born 1737) who married Cicely DiUworth of Lancaster at Yealand 1774, and in 1788 founded the Crewdson Bank in Kendal. Thomas died 1795 and his wife 1814. The following were the children of Thomas and Cicely who lived to mature years:- William Dillworth, b. 1774, m. 1798 Deborah Braith- waite of Kendal. She died at Helme Lodge, Kendal, (which W.D.C. had built in 1826) in 1844, and W.D.C. in 1851. Thomas (of Manchester) b. 1779, m. 1808 Margaret Bragg of Whitehaven. She died 1822: he died at Manchester 1836. Isaac (of Manchester) b. 1780, m. Elizabeth Jowitt of Leeds 1803. He died 1844: she died 1855. Rachel, b. 1782, m. 1810, Robert Jowitt of Leeds. She died at Leeds 1856 and R.J. 1862. Esther, b. 1784, m. 1833 William Boulton. She died at Manchester 1863. Joseph (of Manchester) b. 1787, m. (1) Rachel Jowitt of Leeds 1815. She died 1826. J.C. m. (2) Anna Wright of Lammas Norfolk. J.C. died 1844, and his wife 1879. Wilson (of Manchester) B. 1790, m. 1832, Margaret Robson of Sunderland. John married Margaret Braithwaite,1 daughter of Bryan Braithwaite and Margaret, on 2 Jan 1700 in FMH Kendal. Margaret was born in 1676 in Kendal, Cumbria. They had five children: John, Richard, Bryan, Jonathan, and Margaret. 3-John Crewdson1 was born on 30 Oct 1701 in Kendal, Cumbria and died on 30 Dec 1760 in Kendal, Cumbria at age 59. John married Rachel Wilson,1 daughter of Thomas Wilson1,3,4 and Rachel,1,4 on 15 Dec 1724 in FMH Kendal. Rachel was born on 3 Dec 1688 in Kendal, Cumbria and died on 27 Jun 1775 at age 86. They had two children: John and Samuel. 5-John Crewdson was born on 21 Sep 1755 in Kendal, Cumbria and died on 12 Feb 1787 at age 31. 5-Samuel Crewdson was born on 30 Sep 1755 in Kendal, Cumbria and died on 8 Dec 1794 at age 39. 4-Thomas Crewdson was born on 16 Apr 1728 in Kendal, Cumbria, died in Kendal, Cumbria, and was buried on 28 Apr 1728 in Kendal, Cumbria. 4-William Crewdson was born on 23 Jun 1729 in Kendal, Cumbria and was buried on 9 Jan 1737. 4-Margaret Crewdson was born on 3 Feb 1732 in Kendal, Cumbria and was buried on 7 May 1796. 4-Isaac Crewdson was born on 9 Aug 1735 in Kendal, Cumbria. Isaac married Hannah Rebanks, daughter of Thomas Rebanks and Mary, on 10 Dec 1760. Hannah was born on 9 Nov 1728. They had one daughter: Rachel. 5-Rachel Crewdson was born on 17 Dec 1765. 4-Thomas Crewdson1,5,6 was born on 8 Aug 1737 in Kendal, Cumbria and died on 14 Sep 1795 in Kendal, Cumbria at age 58. General Notes: Joint founder of Maude, Wilson & Crewdson's Bank in Kendal. This bank amalgamated in 1840 with John Wakefield & Sons and thus became Wakefield Crewdson & Company.
