University Art RWC 2550 El Camino Real Redwood City (650) 328-3500 Watercolor paint: Artist quality is recommended as it has a higher pigment load. Winsor & Newton, Holbein, Daniel Smith and M. Graham are all wonderful – small tubes ok. Avoid “hues”. It’s ok If you do not have these exact colors so long as you have a COOL & WARM version of RED, YELLOW & BLUE. • Cool Red: Quinacridone Red (alternative: Alizarin Crimson, Quinacridone Magenta, Opera) • Warm Red: Cadmium Red LiGht • Cool Yellow: Winsor Lemon (alternatives: Daniel Smith’s Hansa Yellow Light) • Warm Yellow: Indian Yellow (alternatives: New Gamboge, Daniel Smith’s Hansa Yellow Deep) • Cool Blue: Ultramarine Blue (or French Ultramarine) • Warm Blue: Pthalo Blue (green shade) (alternative: Winsor Blue green shade) • Black: Ivory Black Watercolor Brushes: Soft, synthetic brushes are fine. RECOMMENDED BRAND & STYLE: Robert Simmon’s or Winsor & Newton white nylon or Princeton Art & Brush Co. 4050 series. • (at least 2) #8 round brush or close in size. Feel free to bring your favorite brushes as well. Watercolor Paper: 11” x 15” watercolor paper. We will be creating multiple sample swatch pages. If you want your pages to fit into a standard 11” x 14” portfolio please cut or mark your paper to size before class begins. • Canson XL watercolor paper pad 30 sheets (recommended) Palette: plastic palette with wells and mixing space. Round is recommended but you can get away with a rectangular one. A good plastic watercolor palette should run about $20 +. We will sQueeze the paint on the palette in class – do not prep your palette before class! RECOMMENDED BRAND & STYLE: Speedball Color Wheel palette. This is a great palette if you think you will continue with watercolor. Alternative: Jones Palette kit II or similar Other tools: • 2 Large containers for water (at least quart sized) • Pen or pencil to take notes • Paper towels • Small spray bottle • Brush cleaner (I love “Masters Brush Cleaner” – it really does the trick!) .
