Hill Power Play NOV 2018

Hill Power Play NOV 2018

The 2018 Midterm Election not HILL only flipped majority leadership in the House of Representatives it also reshuffled the power and POWER influence of state delegations PLAY across the capitol. CALIFORNIA In the likely event that Nancy Pelosi takes back the Speaker’s gavel, with several other Californians vying for other House Leadership positions (Reps. Aguilar, Swalwell and Lee), and at least 40 members of the Democratic Caucus, California’s power position in Washington is substantially improved. Congresswoman Maxine Waters will chair the House Financial Services Committee while Congressman Mark Takano is in line to Chair the Veterans’ Affairs Committee and Congressman Adam Schiff takes the lead of Intel. MASSACHUSETTS The all-Democratic Massachusetts delegation will likely benefit from chairmanships of the House Ways & Means (Richard Neal) and Rules (Jim McGovern) Committees. In addition, Katherine Clark is vying for Caucus Vice Chair. Massachusetts’ transformation from a state with two senators without seniority and zero majority party representatives into a team controlling two of the most powerful committees in the House will be striking. NEW YORK New York will benefit from the ascension to chair positions by Nita Lowey (Appropriations), Jerry Nadler (Judiciary), Nydia Velazquez (Small Business), and Eliot Engel (Foreign Affairs). In addition, it is possible that Representative Hakeem Jeffries could win a role in Democratic Leadership. This transformation combined with Senator Chuck Schumer serving as the Senate Democratic Leader places New York as arguably one of the most powerful democratic delegations in Congress. WASHINGTON Washington state loses the Majority Leadership post held by Representative McMorris Rodgers but gains the chairmanship of the House Armed Services Committee (Adam Smith). Together with the strong and senior positions held by Senators Patty Murray (#3 in Dem Leadership and Ranking Member of the Health, Labor, Educations and Pensions Committee) and Maria Cantwell (Ranking Member Energy & Natural Resources or Commerce, Science and Transportation), Washington state is very well positioned for the 116th Congress. TEXAS Texas loses chairmanships of the House Armed Services (Mac Thornberry), Agriculture (Mike Conaway), Financial Services (Jeb Hensarling), Homeland Security (Mike McCaul), Rules (Pete Sessions), Science, Space & Technology (Lamar Smith) and Ways & Means (Kevin Brady). No other state comes close in cumulative loss when compared to Texas. www.cassidy.com .
