Upcoming Events Bullying is definitely a topic that is often discussed in today’s society. As a December 14 - PTA Christmas Party parent it is a topic that strikes fear in your heart. No one wants their child to 6pm-8pm either be bullied or be the bully. It can be hard to tell sometimes though December 17th - 19th PTA when it is bullying or something else. One of the best things you can do as a Candy Grams parent is to provide a listening ear and ask clarifying questions. Here is how to discern if the behavior being reported to you is RUDE, MEAN, or December 19th - Third Grade BULLYING. trip to the Aquarium 9:00am - 1:30pm Rude – Behaviors and words that are considered rude are often unintentional, inconsiderate, and/or thoughtless. For kids, meanness might include negative comments about the way a person is dressed, the way a person looks, or the person’s learning ability. Bullying – Behavior that is intentional, repetitive, and aggressive. School Hours Another element of bullying is an imbalance of power. Bullying may be Regular School Hours physical (punching), verbal (words and threats), relational (excluding K-5 9:00am - 3:25pm friends or spreading rumors), or cyberbullying (involving technology). School Attendance is Important The Mukilteo School District recognizes that the educational process requires a continuity of instruction, active classroom participation and meaningful life experiences, all of which, require regular attendance to school. Making school attendancea priority may be the biggest factor influencing a student’s academic success. Benefits to daily attendance Regular attendance to school, allows a student to keep up with daily classroom activities, lessons, assignments, tests and quizzes and to complete them on time. Other benefits also include: Academic Achievement – students who attend school regularly are more likely to pass their classes and to meet standard on local and state assessments. Opportunities – students who attend school regularly have opportunities to participate in field trips, quest speakers, clubs, activities, athletics and more. Being a member of the school – students who participate regularly in school feel a sense of belonging and being a member of something bigger than themselves. They learn team work, communication skills, meet others from diverse cultures and other valuable social skills. Closure or School Delays due to Weather HOW TO GET INFORMATION ABOUT CLOSURE OR DELAYS. If inclement weather, a power outage, or some other emergency makes it necessary to close some or all Mukilteo schools, that information will be issued to the local news media through the FlashAlert website and will be available through other sources. Check the local media. Many local radio stations provide regular reports on school closures, including KRKO (1380 AM), KIRO (97.3 FM), or KOMO (1000 AM). As for television stations, watch the morning news on KOMO (Channel 4), KING (Channel 5), KIRO (Channel 7) or KCPQ (Channel 13). Check the website. You also can check the status by going to the school district website. Check the School Report website on the Internet – The status of all local schools is listed each morning on the School Report website. You can access that information at www.schoolreport.org. Meet our Administrative Intern What’s Happening with PTA! Hello Horizon Huskies! A big THANKS goes out to our wonderful PTA for organizing successful kid events! My name is Kristen Morris. I have been a teacher at - We had a large turnout for our September Multicultural Horizon for the last four years. Prior to Horizon, I taught Night. in Glendale, Arizona and Oak Harbor, Washington. I am - Our Book Fair was a success with lots of books getting very passionate about supporting students, families, into the hands of our students. teachers, and the community. This brought me to pursue - The October Trunk or Treat event was well attended a career in administration. Last year, I started my and many volunteers handed out donated candy to all the Master’s Degree in Educational Administration through trick or treaters! Western Washington University.
