SENATE SPONSORSHIP Kopp and Morse, House Committees Senate Committees HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 10-1006 101 CONCERNING THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE COLORADO NATIONAL 102 GUARD. 1 WHEREAS, In January of 1860, the first General Assembly of the 2 Territory of Jefferson met in Denver, passing an act "to authorize the 3 formation of military companies" in the area; and 4 WHEREAS, On February 2, 1860, in their first official action, the 5 Jefferson Rangers mobilized to defeat a gang of thugs in Denver, driving ng 2010 6 them out; and 26, Readi 7 WHEREAS, In June of 1861, Territorial Governor William Gilpin y SENATE nal 8 appointed Richard E. Whitsitt to be the first Adjutant General of the Fi 9 newly established Colorado Territory; and Januar 10 WHEREAS, In the 150 years since its inception, the Colorado 11 National Guard has been prepared for and called upon to serve in every 12 major state, national, and international campaign the United States has 13 undertaken; and ng 2010 25, Readi y Shading denotes HOUSE amendment. Januar 1 WHEREAS, The First Colorado Infantry aided in the defeat of the 2 Texas Confederates in New Mexico at the Battle of Glorieta Pass on 3 March 28, 1862, and the First Colorado Volunteers were the first 4 American soldiers into Manila in the Spanish-American War; and 5 WHEREAS, Members of the Colorado National Guard served in 6 the European and Pacific Theatres during World War II, aiding in the 7 liberation of the Dachau labor camp outside Munich, Germany in 1945, 8 and contributing significantly to the Allied victories in both regions; and 9 WHEREAS, The 120th Fighter Squadron of the Colorado National 10 Guard was the first Air National Guard unit to obtain federal recognition, 11 receiving the honor on June 30, 1946, and, on January 26, 1968, was the 12 first Air National Guard unit to be deployed to Vietnam; and 13 WHEREAS, In 1953, the Colorado Air National Guard formed the 14 Minute Men, a precision aerial flying demonstration team, who, in 1956, 15 were designated by the National Guard Bureau as the official precision 16 aerial flying demonstration team of the Air National Guard; and 17 WHEREAS, The Colorado National Guard has executed multiple 18 relief and rescue operations during blizzards, tornadoes, floods, fires, and 19 other emergencies that have befallen the state of Colorado; and 20 WHEREAS, Since December 2001, the Colorado National Guard 21 has sent over 6,000 soldiers and airmen to Iraq and Afghanistan in 22 defense of our nation and in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and 23 Operation Iraqi Freedom; and 24 WHEREAS, As part of the State Partnership Program established 25 by the United States military, the Colorado National Guard has been 26 paired in bilateral cooperation with the Republic of Slovenia and the 27 Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan; and 28 WHEREAS, The Colorado National Guard and its members have 29 selflessly and heroically served their state and their nation for 150 years; 30 now, therefore, 31 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Sixty-seventh 32 General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the Senate concurring herein: 33 That we, the members of the Sixty-seventh General Assembly, 34 honor the Colorado National Guard in this, its 150th year of service to the 35 state and to the country; and 36 That we salute and appreciate the many generations of men and 37 women who, through their service in the Colorado National Guard, have 38 bravely given their energy and lives to the welfare of all Coloradans and 39 to the protection of the United States and the ideals of peace and 40 democracy for which it stands. 41 Be It Further Resolved, That copies of this Joint Resolution be sent 42 to Governor Bill Ritter, Jr.; General Craig R.
