Pioneer Valley Jazz Shares Presents: the Tom Rainey Trio

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Glenn Siegel, 413-320-1089 [email protected] Pioneer Valley Jazz Shares presents: The Tom Rainey Trio Pioneer Valley Jazz Shares begins Season Six with a performance by the Tom Rainey Trio, featuring Tom Rainey, drums, Ingrid Laubrock, saxophones, and Mary Halvorson, guitar on Thursday, September 14 at 7:30pm at the Institute for the Musical Arts, 125 Cape St. (Rt. 112), Goshen, MA. Single tickets ($15) are available at www.jazzshares.org and at the door. Born in Santa Barbara, California in 1957, Tom Rainey moved to New York in 1979 after a stint at Berklee College of Music. Over his 30 year career, Rainey has become one of the music’s most in- demand sideman and an acknowledged master of jazz drumming. He has appeared on close to 100 recordings, including important releases by Tim Berne, Nels Cline, Fred Hersch, Tony Malaby, Tom Varner, Drew Gress, Kenny Werner, Mark Helias, and Kris Davis. Rainey released his own first album, Pool School (Clean Feed), in 2010 and has made three additional recordings as a leader for the Swiss Intakt label. His latest, Hotel Grief, featuring Laubrock and Halvorson, “is a 61-minute set of free improvisation,” writes Greg Buium, “but it is a cleverly structured, wonderfully coherent series of musical gestures. It is a magnificent, and endlessly rewarding, date." Originally from Germany, Ingrid Laubrock resides in Brooklyn, NY. Between 1989 and 2009 she was active as a saxophonist and composer in London/UK. She has worked with: Muhal Richards Abrams, Dave Douglas, Kenny Wheeler, Jason Moran, William Parker, Tyshawn Sorey, Craig Taborn, Luc Ex, and many others. Her main projects as a leader are Anti-House, Sleepthief, Ingrid Laubrock Septet and Ubatuba. She is a member of Mary Halvorson Septet, Kris Davis Quintet and Nate Wooley’s Battle Pieces. She was one of the featured soloists in Anthony Braxton’s opera Trillium J. She won Rising Star/soprano saxophone in the 2015 in the 'Downbeat Annual Critics Poll. Laubrock “sounds happily unsettled,” writes Ben Ratliff. “On tenor and soprano, she’s omnivorous and pointed, slouching and precise, humorous and austere. You didn’t walk away thinking, well, that sounded like a certain person, place or time. Ms. Laubrock encouraged a constant sense of renewal.” One of improvised music’s most in-demand guitarists, Mary Halvorson has been active in New York since 2002. After three years of study with visionary composer and saxophonist Anthony Braxton, Halvorson became an active member of several of his bands. Over the past decade she has worked with such diverse bandleaders as Marc Ribot, Taylor Ho Bynum, Myra Melford, Jason Moran, Joe Morris and Mike Reed. Halvorson leads a trio featuring bassist John Hébert and drummer Ches Smith, co-leads Thumbscrew with Michael Formanek and Tomas Fujiwara, and has released critically acclaimed quintet and septet recordings for Firehouse 12. The Wall Street Journal calls her, “one of the most exciting and original guitarists in jazz.” Thanks to our business sponsors: Davis Financial Group, Florence Savings Bank, UMass Fine Arts Center, Downtown Sounds, Carol Abbe Smith Delap Real Estate, River Valley Co-op, Simmer Music, Bueno y Sano, Tony Margherita Management, Haydenville Woodworking & Design, The Artisan Gallery, BarbaraWeen:Visage, Hampshire College, Waugh Agency, Cortlandt Manor Optometry, Jagfly Hosting, Kathleen Collins Wealth Management, Peoples Bank and PV Squared. .
