Tuan Reflection for Today’s Gospel: What in the world does she see in him? We ask incredulously when the object of a friend’s interest seems unworthy. One may ask the same of God regarding the imperfect people who become prophets or disciples. Why would God choose Isaiah, a man who admits to being unclean, and worse, doomed for such was the fate of those who had seen God? Why would Jesus choose Peter, impetuous, stubborn Peter, who admits to being a sinful man, foreshadowing his eventual denial of Jesus? Yet God chooses both and each end up playing major roles in the history of the church. So too does Paul, who calls himself unworthy because he had persecuted Christians prior to his conversion. All three have an unexpected encounter with the Lord, We hear of two today. Both Isaiah and Peter receive a sign and an invitation. A seraph symbolically burns away the sin from Isaiah’s lips. Peter’s net, empty all night, fills with fish. Though unsure of their worthiness, each accept the call. Paul recognizes how this can happen, for it happened to him. It is not their own virtue but the grace of God that made them worthy. And so they respond, “Here I am,” and “left everything and followed” (Isaiah 6:8, Luke 5:11). How is God calling you? Can you recognize God’s grace? Saints of the Week The two brothers were born in Thessalonica, in present-day Greece – Cyril in about 827–828 and Metho- dius about 815–820. Cyril was reputedly the youngest of seven brothers; he was born Constantine,[7] but was given the name Cyril upon becoming a monk in Rome shortly before his death,[8][9][10] according to the Vita Cyrilli ("The Life of Cyril"). Methodius was born Michael and was given the name Methodius upon becoming a monk at Mysian Olympus (present-day Uludağ), in northwest Turkey.[11] Their father was Leo, a droungarios of the Byzantine theme of Thessalonica, and their mother was Maria. The brothers were praised for their learning and cultivated for their influence in Constantinople. Anastasius Bibliothecarius would later call Cyril "a man of apostolic life" and "a man of great wisdom".[21] Their project in Moravia found support from Pope Adrian II, who formally authorized the use of the new Slavic liturgy. Subsequently Methodius was ordained as priest by the pope himself, and five Slavic disciples were or- dained as priests (Saint Gorazd, Saint Clement of Ohrid and Saint Naum) and as deacons (Saint Ange- lar and Saint Sava) by the prominent bishops Formosus and Gauderic.[22] Cyril and Methodius along with these five disciples are collectively venerated (mainly by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church) as "Seven Saints". [23] The newly made priests officiated in their own languages at the altars of some of the principal churches. Feeling his end approaching, Cyril became a Basilian monk, was given the new name Cyril, [24] and died in Rome fifty days later (14 February 869). There is some question as to assertion of the Translatio (ix.) that he was made a bishop. Through their work they influenced the cultural development of all Slavs, for which they received the title "Apostles to the Slavs".[4] They are credited with devising the Glagolitic alphabet, the first alphabet used to transcribe Old Church Slavonic.[5] After their deaths, their pupils continued their missionary work among other Slavs. Both brothers are venerated in the Orthodox Church as saints with the title of "equal-to- apostles". In 1880, Pope Leo XIII introduced their feast into the calendar of the Roman Catholic Church. In 1980, Pope John Paul II declared them co-patron saints of Europe, together with Benedict of Nursia.[6] Welcome to St. Mary’s A Heartfelt Thank you from CCW We are blessed to have you with us today--and every weekend! Religious Education News Good Morning to All, It is that time of year again!! Totus Tuus registration begins next week. Totus Tuus is a summer catechetical youth program that is a week long “parish mission” for Catholic Youth entering grades 1 – 12. It is dedicated to the proclamation of the Gospel and promoting Catholic faith. Totus Tuus is a latin phrase meaning “totally yours”, was the motto of Saint Pope John Paul II. Its Mission is to inspire in young people a true longing for holiness, a deep desire for daily conversion, and an openness to their vocation by challenging them to give themselves entirely to Christ through Mary and by continually strengthening their prayer lives in imitation of her. St. Mary’s dates of this awesome program is July 21-26. There is a morning session for grades 1-6 and an evening session for grades 7-12. You can register on line at www.givecentral.org/TTJoliet. Note, only on line registrations are accepted. If you have any questions please email me or go to the Diocese of Joliet website. Hoping to see many smiling faces here. God Bless, Fred Ban, Director Of Religious ED Movies with the Saints Please plan on joining us to watch "Paul, Apostle of Christ", on Feb 10th and Feb 17th at 6:30 pm in the Parish Center. Paul went from being one of the most infamous persecutors of Christians to Christ's most influential apostle. He had problems just like we do, and learning about how he overcame them, can be a source of inspiration to us in our own lives. The movie is approximately 110 mins in length and so we will watch half of the movie each night, followed by discussion and light snacks.
