Recycled Ride to Atwick, Hornsea and Mappleton October 5Th 2018

Recycled ride to Atwick, Hornsea and Mappleton October 5th 2018 Outward: Tickton, Routh, Leven, Brandesburton, Bewholme, Atwick Return: Hornsea, Mappleton, Great Hatfield, Little Hatfield, Long Riston, Arnold, Benningholme Bridge, Meaux, Routh and Tickton Distance travelled 41.73 miles Members attending: Martin, Adrian, John (Bodders), Brenda, Derek, Alison, Bob Savage, Chris (The Voice), Bob Watson, Steve, Rod, Dave (Big Wheel) and this week’s special guest Marina. Eleven of us met at the Swinemoor roundabout where we welcomed Alison’s friend Marina who was coming with us for a taster, prior we hope, to joining the U3A and subsequently our cycling group. The weather forecast had threatened light rain to commence in the early afternoon so we were expecting to maybe get a little damp at some stage during the course of our ride. We obviously would have taken this in our stride, because as you well know “we don’t like it too easy.” Fortunately, the rain held off and we arrived home nice and dry. Arriving at Tickton we met up with our final two riders of the day, Martin and Rod. Martin resides in Market Weighton and so transports his bike by car to this point while Rod is a native who awaits our arrival just around the corner from his home. I think that it is worth mentioning here that Rod got stung by a wasp some months ago and suffered a very bad reaction and indeed he is still undergoing a course of treatment. This is his first outing since June so welcome back Rod. It seemed a bit strange cycling down the cycle path to Leven. Usually the traffic on the road is whizzing past but due to the road improvement works being carried out at Routh, the flow was all a bit sedentary and we passed them all rather gleefully. Our first break of the day came at Bert’s Café where we stopped briefly for a coffee and a chat. Here I was reminded of that well- known rule that shorts should be worn on all occasions up to and including the date when we alter the clocks. 1 Suitably refreshed we proceeded to Bewholme and Atwick. Here we paused to admire The Black Horse Inn. Maybe we should give this a try for a lunch stop on one of our future rides. However, we were aware that our next stop, the Randa Café, situated between Atwick and Hornsea, had been given rave reports by Ian Metcalfe. Ian, unfortunately could not be with us today as he was holidaying in Turkey. How sad is that! 2 Most of us had the All-Day Breakfast which had us salivating well before it was cooked and served. The proof of the pudding was in the eating and it was absolutely top class not only in quality but also in the value for money stakes. FAB-U-LOUS. See menu 3 After lunch we hauled ourselves back onto our bikes vowing to return when next we passed this way. The sea was relatively calm as we made our way along the sea front at Hornsea before passing that renowned chippy named Whiteheads. There had been some suggestion that there might be a way through Rolston to Great Hatfield but this was not to be. Alison, acting as chief scout, headed off into the wilds of Rolston but soon returned having been unable to find a way through. Our next port of call being Mappleton where we turned onto our tried and tested route to Great Hatfield, Long Riston and Arnold where, wait for it, we had a photo call. The rest of the journey home proved to be pretty uneventful, apart from crossing the main road at Routh. It was the normal free for all as the workmen directing the traffic flow at the roadworks had retired for the weekend The singing members of the group were pleased to get home well in time to prepare for their concert with The Beverley Male Voice Choir at Walkington in the evening. A great day out in the saddle, the weather was kind to us and the memory of that all-day breakfast will linger on for quite some time. Dave (Big Wheel) OYB 4 .
