IGAD Bi-annual Meeting on Food Security and Nutrition in the Context of Desert Locust Invasion, COVID-19 Pandemic and Widespread Flooding South Sudan Update on Desert Locusts George Tadu OLINE DISCUSSION TUESDAY 10 NOVEMBER 2020 CURRENT SITUATION & RESPONSE • Desert Locust swarms attacked; Lokormoromo village of Kapoeta East County of Eastern Equatoria on August 1, 2020 • The swarm of desert locust from South East of Kenya and Uganda invaded Kapoeta South County on August 2, 2020, which spread into Nakoringomo and Nabulbul Boma/villages • On 4th,August 2020, DL swarm moved to Kapoeta North, settled at Karkomuge then swarm flew to Mogos and Jie of Kapoeta East toward border of Pibor ,BomaCounties at Ethiopian and Kenyan borders . • 75 DL Control Officers Trained; 180 Key awareness messages on DL biology, identification and control produced and disseminated CONTROL & COORDINATION MEASURES (Place picture here) • Coordination mechanism between national ministry of FAO, agriculture and 2hotspots states and 6 counties established • Coordination with IGAD countries established • With support from FAO DL control chemicals and equipment purchased and supplied to the hotspot areas of Torit, Kapoeta and Magwi • Ten Motorbikes purchased and distributed to hotspots counties • Funding Needed (USD): 1.5m • Funding Received (USD):0.205 • Funding Gaps (USD):1.295 LIVELIHOOD RESPONSE (Place picture here) • Impact assessment conducted (4th week September to 1st wek of October) in Kapoeta South, Kapoeta East, Nguaro, Magwi, Ikwoto and Torit Counties (hotspots) • Community Sensitization and awareness on Effects DL chemical control carried in Kapoeta (24/9), Torit (22/10) Counties (hotspots) CHALLENGES AND LESSONS LEARNED • Limited technical capacity (Place picture here) • Poor road infrastructure and transportation means • COVID-19 affected state –state movements • Lack of funding and government funding support • Limited number of communication apps and internet connectivity • DL can be an opportunity for empowering farming communities to combat other invasive pests • DL invasions and COVID impact are real threats to already weak food security .
