As thosemembers who have attendedother very successfulBSBI meetingsthere will already know (plantworkshops, AGM, day conferencesetc.), the P.S.L.at Readinghave excellent facilities which canorovide for all the variedactivities which we havecome to associatewith our Exhibition meetingsin recentyears:- space for exhibits and our books, space for tea and convetsation,a lecture theatrefor slidesand a seniorcommon room for our eveningConversazione buff'et. Equally import- ant, or almost more so, the BSBI has beenolfered a warm welcomefor this meetingby Professor JohnParker, Professor ofBotany, andhis colleaguesin theSchool ofPlant Sciences. tmDortant Notices / Editorial Additional facilities, which have not beenavailable in London, are ample car parking on site, and an easybusjourney fiom Readingstation. The notice and programmewill be sentout as usual in the Septembermailing, and with this StephenJury will be able to sendmaps, directions from the rail stationand detailsof busesfrom centralLondon, someof which stop very closeby the campus- for thoserequiring these. Also suggestionsfor B & B accommodationfor thosewho would like to enjoy the Conversazioneand stay ovemight. We look forward to this Exhibition 1993at Readingas a new venture, with the possibility of returning n€xt year to the Natural History Museum,if prob- lems of spacein our 'traditional'home can be solved. Smith Assessingtetrad recording: a continuationofthe 1992work (seeField Meeting Reporton page45) The joint SussexBotanical Recording Society/BSBI 1992 meeting at Midhurst, West Sussexto assesstetrad recording provided so many interestingresults that we needto run anothermeeting this year to answersome of the questionsraised! Surprisingly, there was little relationship between the number of speciesrecorded and the number of habitatssearched or length of route, and we wish to investigatethis and other problems in more detail. Pleasemeet in the lay-by at StedhamCross-roads on the A272 two miles west of Midhurst (GR SU/861.219)- the sameplace as last year - on both daysat 10.45am. Judy Rich againhas offered a creamtea on Saturdayafternoon! All are welcome, including both thosewho contributedlast year and thosewho were unableto attend. TIM RICH, 37 Hartfield Road,Forest Row, EastSussex EDITORIAL This is arother large issueof BSBI News, but evenso someinteresting contributions have had to be held over until the next issue;I apologiseto the authorsand promisethat they will be the first in the queuenext time. This apparentabundance of items for Newr should not discourageanyone from sendingin new contributions, these are always welcome.Ifyou are able to type your note or print- out from computerthen pleasedo so. lt is a tremendoushelp to be able to scanit directly into the Editorial / Hon General Secretary's Notes computerand savesyour editor many hours of tedioustwo-fingered typingl But, if you don't have accessto a typewriter or computer, don't be put off from sending in your legibly hand-written document. You will almost always get a proof to check, and correctionsare easy to make on comDuter. Thanksto all thosemembers who wrote in responseto my note in the last BSBI Nev'sabout an indexto Stace'sNelr Fhru <tlrhe British /s/e.r.Sufficient inteiest has been shown to rnakepublica- tion a viableproposition and an order form is enclosedwith this mailing. By now all thosemembers who wrote in responseto my note in the Septemberissue of BSBI Newsabout the settingup of an Alien Study Group shouldhave receiveda much belatedacknowl- edgement. The first informal meetingwill take placeat the AGM in Lincoln with a follow-up at the RecordersConference in York. It is always sadto mark the deathof fiiends and I am particularly saddenedby the recentdeath of two Honorarymembers of the BSBI. IreneVaughan I hadthe privilegeof kno*'ing for over 25 yearswhich, rernarkably, covered only the final quarterof her long life. Edgar Wiggins, I had known for a much shorter time but I shall never forget his help, encouragementand mischievous humourwhen I took over fiom him as editor of 8^581Nerr:r.
