It is a non-profit making organisation, authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority. The Credit Union was set up and is run by volunteers within the local community. The Credit Union exists to serve its members. The main aims being to encourage members to save regularly, and to provide loans at a reasonable rate of interest, enabling members to manage their finances more easily. Joining: Joining is easy, all you have to do is fill in a membership application form, provide two proofs of identification and £2 membership fee. You are then given a membership number and a passbook. Saving: Save as little as £1.00 per week. Children can save too. Members can rest in the assurance that their savings are secure, with many levels of security in place as well as internal and external audits. Simply deposit cash or cheques at the Princetown Service Point or set up a standing order. Borrowing: Loans can be arranged to relieve the pressure of an unexpected big bill. Borrow up to twice your savings from the pool after 13 weeks of regular saving. Interest rates are very low between 1.5% to 2% per month. Example A loan of £500, paid back weekly at £10.84 over one year would only cost £63.32 in interest. (No loan– is too small.) Free Life– Insurance is provided by the Credit Union on all savings and loans. The amount payable is in proportion to the amount of savings the member has, and benefits are payable only on the death of the member. Usually the beneficiary gets twice what the member had saved. To date our number of members stands at 27 and is growing. Let me tell you a little of what we do, then you can judge for yourself if the HMWI is for you. Our meetings start each year in February (too risky in January due to weather). We generally have an interesting speaker coupled with an activity relating to the talk, for example we have had aromatherapy, weaving, bauble making, trying on hats with Mrs B’s Bonnets, an hilarious talk from The Farmer’s Wife of Postbridge and a Pilates taster session, to name but a few of the activities we get up to. We have trips further afield to places of interest, including theatre trips, but always the highlight of each year is a visit to Postbridge Panto where a good laugh is always guaranteed. But the year would not be complete for us without the seniors Christmas party held at the Plume of Feathers each December. We have two trips per year where families are invited to come along. When you read this article we will have been on our trip to Morwellham Quay. You may have seen us, or even been with us when we do our Comic Relief and Sport Relief processions throughout the village, or indeed camping out in the snow for Shelterbox, all good fun but at the same time helping a good cause. You may have two taster sessions for £1 each before you make your mind up. Come and join us on the first Wednesday of each month in church hall Tor Royal Lane. 7.30pm. Earlier this year our wonderful, hard working President of 8 years, Wendy Stones stood down from her role. She was our inspiration from 2003-2011. A small party was held in her honour and she was presented with a hand painted milk churn as a mark of our gratitude and thanks for all she has done for HMWI. If you are in possession of a State pension and would like to join in the seniors party in the Plume of Feathers on 10th December, please leave your name and contact details at the Post Office and we will be in touch. It only remains for me to say thank you for reading this first article by HMWI. If you would like to know more, please feel free to contact Sue on 01822 880395 or just come along.
