Five former Bruins captured the country’s attention as part of the 1994 U.S. World Cup team which advanced to the second round for the fi rst time in World Cup his- tory. Caligiuri started in all four games for the U.S., and Jones appeared in four with one start. Other former Bruins on the team were Friedel, Moore, Mike Lapper and assistant coach Sigi Schmid. In the fi rst round of the 1994 World Cup, the U.S. team tied Switzerland 1-1 then upset Colombia 2-1 at the Rose Bowl in what was then the biggest win in U.S. soccer history. In 1989, Caligiuri, who made over 100 international appearances for Team USA, became one of the United States’ most famous players after scoring the historic goal in the CONCACAF qualifying round. His 35-yard dipping volley gave the U.S. a 1-0 victory over Trinidad & Tobago and placed the U.S. in the 1990 World Cup for the fi rst time since 1950. At the 1990 World Cup, he started all three of the U.S. team’s games and scored the country’s fi rst World Cup goal in 40 years. Three other Bruins played in the 1990 World Cup — Chris Henderson, Paul Krumpe and David Vanole.
