This large watershed covers v e a e r e r r 44 percent of the state and 90 percent of Illinois’ population resides C r le a pp b within 55 counties wholly or partially included in the watershed. A m The Illinois River, one of the major tributaries of the Mississippi CALHOUN MACOUPIN SHELBY E GREENE River, is part of the only inland waterway linking the Great Lakes 91° M A C O U P I N to the Gulf of Mexico. The Illinois River watershed has a drainage r CLARK k e M v CUMBERLAND ac e i area of 28,906 square miles or sq mi (75,156 square kilometers or o re u R pin C sq km), of which approximately 3,058 sq mi (4,920 sq km) are i a k located in Indiana and 1,070 sq mi (1,722 sq km) in Wisconsin. s a MONTGOMERY k The watershed contains the drainage basins of several of the Illinois’ s a JERSEY K EFFINGHAM major rivers including the Des Plaines, Kankakee, Fox, Vermilion, CRAWFORD Mackinaw, Spoon, Sangamon, and La Moine Rivers. 39° 39° FAYETTE JASPER The Illinois River watershed recently has become a focus of state and federal agencies and other organizations interested in integrated L BOND i t watershed management. As a result, issues being discussed at the t MADISON le watershed scale are related to habitat restoration, floodplain manage- W a ment, erosion and sedimentation, and water quality. In support of this CLAY b effort, the Illinois Scientific Surveys have initiated development of ash LAWRENCE R RICHLAND iv the Illinois Rivers Decision Support System (http://ilrdss.sws.uiuc.edu) e MARION r to organize data and information related to the Illinois River watershed, to document project activities within the watershed, and to assess and CLINTON evaluate the effectiveness of restoration projects and management r practices.
