Commencement college of engineering university of california, berkeley May 15, 2018 150 Years of Innovation Since the University of California was founded in 1868, engineering has been central to Berkeley’s curriculum and identity. This year, the College of Engineering joins the university in marking 150 years of education, innovation and public service. Today, we celebrate the accomplishments of this year’s graduates, who join an enduring legacy of great achievements and successes in the College of Engineering. 1873 The University of California’s first graduating class included two engineers, as well as a future governor, mayor, math professor, minister and three future regents of the university. When the university was founded, three of its six colleges were devoted to engineering—civil, mechanic arts and mining. 2018 Today, the College of Engineering comprises seven departments that offer top-ranked programs in every engineering field, attracting the best students from the state, the nation and across the world. This year, the college has more than 1,600 graduates—earning doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s degrees. commencement 2018 1 Pledge of Ethical Conduct for Engineers We, the graduating engineering class of 2018, in recognition of the importance of our technologies in affecting the quality of life throughout the world, and in accepting a personal obligation to our profession, its members and the communities we serve, pledge to commit ourselves to the highest ethical and professional conduct. Throughout our careers, we will consider the ethical implications and the impact on safety, health and welfare of the public and the environment of the work we do before we take action. While the demands placed upon us may be great, we make this declaration because we recognize that individual responsibility is the first step on the path to a better world for all. — adopted by the student relations committee, engineering student council and some 85 student societies of the uc berkeley college of engineering live webcast at engineering.berkeley.edu/BEgrad18 twitter & instagram: #BEgrad18 2 berkeley engineering live webcast at engineering.berkeley.edu/BEgrad18 twitter & instagram: #BEgrad18 commencement 2018 3 Master’s and Doctoral Commencement Baccalaureate Commencement tuesday, may 15, 2018 | 9:00 a.m. | hearst greek theatre tuesday, may 15, 2018 | 2:00 p.m. | hearst greek theatre entry of graduates entry of graduates entry of faculty entry of faculty Led by Steven D.
