Home of the Virden Oil Capitals in Virden Manitoba. Everyone in Virden is thrilled to be hosting you for all home games of the Oil Capitals. The team has continued to be a strong community organization and have created much excitement, not only on game night, but including when they take part in community events at schools, with service clubs and throughout the Westman Region. We are grateful for the team’s commitment to the community and we know it starts at the ownership level, through management and players. On behalf of all council and staff and in particular the great staff at Tundra Oil & Gas Place have a great time at the games and please cheer loudly as part of the largest crowds in the MJHL! Go Caps Go! Mayor Jeff McConnell SALUTE TO OUR BILLETS Since the Oil Caps inaugural season, the team has been extremely fortunate to have one of the best groups of supporting billet families in the Canadian Junior Hockey league. Players have travelled from all across North America and have been welcomed into our community with open arms. Without our billets, our team could not operate. We thank you, the billet families, for creating a home away from home for our players. Each year, Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries recognizes a Billet Family of the Month! Each family recognized goes home with a gift package including a $50 Visa Gift Card. Visit www.oilcapshockey.com for the latest news on who is the current MLL Billet Family of the Month. 2 2016-17 MEDIA GUIDE GREETINGS GREETINGS from the MJHL COMMISSIONER Welcome. The 2016-2017 season will be the 15th in my tenure as the league Commissioner. Needless to say, I have enjoyed leading the MJHL over this time. The league is elite and continues to do what it promises. The MJHL develops players for advancement to higher levels of hockey and the league does this in an excellent way. Over the past year, 34 MJHL players received post-secondary scholarships in the USA and Canada combined. The league had a player selected in the 2016 NHL Draft (Dean Stewart) by the Arizona Coyotes and another player attended a NHL Evaluation Camp in July 2016 (Brad Bowles) held by the Calgary Flames. These are two highly visible signs of MJHL Clubs providing top notch development opportunities for its players. The Manitoba Junior Hockey League has advanced Players and Coaches to the WHL from last year to the current season and has nationally recognized Coaches working in the league. Blake Spiller of the Portage Terriers was named the CJHL Coach of the Year the past two seasons. The Old Dutch Showcase has been re-scheduled to the month of December (12 to 14) as the league attempts to instill a new level of fan enthusiasm to one of its marquee events of the season. The league continues to receive excellent support from fans and especially corporate partners who commit valuable financial resources to the success of the league and its mandate of developing players for advancement. As you can see, the success of the MJHL comes about through the efforts of many. Thank you to our special players, coaches, hockey staff, league sponsors, fans and volunteers. On behalf of the member clubs I appreciate all members of the MJHL Community and hope all of you enjoy the 2016-2017 hockey season with us.
