AFRICAN-AMERICAN NEWSPAPERS on Microfilm at the University of Georgia Libraries

AFRICAN-AMERICAN NEWSPAPERS on Microfilm at the University of Georgia Libraries 2nd Edition, 2006 Compiled by Leigh Ann Vey with the assistance of William T. Murray (and a host of other predecessors) African American Newspapers At the University of Georgia Libraries Ed. 2 2006 i African American Newspapers At the University of Georgia Libraries 2nd Edition 2006 Foreword & Acknowledgments The importance of African-Americans in the history of the United States cannot be overstated. For anyone wishing to understand the development of this nation from the earliest days of the republic to the issues currently facing the nation, some understanding of African- American history and culture is prerequisite. Newspapers published and written by African- Americans are an important link to this history. In them are recorded views, viewpoints, people, news, and events of great importance not only to local communities, but the nation and world at large. As well, these are rich resources for insights into cultural aspects of African-American life, as evidenced by the many stories and advertisements about theatres, musical events, including clubs, concerts, and dances, society happenings, fashion, business and trade. Various African-American newspapers have been collected over time at the University of Georgia Libraries for use by its students, faculty, and researchers. These collections consist primarily of microfilm format and the content ranges dates from 1826 to the present era. In some cases, these titles were acquired piecemeal, as research needs required, and in other cases they were purchased as a part of other collections. The resulting microfilm is not considered “a collection” in the formal sense and many individual newspaper titles are cataloged independently of the rest. Obviously, for the purposes of studying African-American history, having a guide to these various titles and collections would be most useful. But this has not been an easy task. The effort to assemble this guide has literally spanned nearly two decades and has involved many people. Richard Shedenhelm deserves credit for putting together teams of people to do early survey work and the results of their work in the late 1990s and early 2000s took the form of the important Afro-American Newspapers on Microfilm at UGA. Working under his guidance were Christi Bamford, Thomas Boyd, Marisa Faiz, Jesse Foley, Joshua Hickman, Katha Massey, Tim Murray, Daniel Nash, Lisa Pittman, Shashank Saksena, Laura Shedenhelm, Rachel Smith and Paul Van Wicklen. This edition adds to those previous efforts. One of the goals of this effort was to reform the previous data, melding it into new information, and producing a distributable guide in both print and PDF formats. Much of this effort was performed by Leigh Ann Vey, who carefully viewed many of the reels listed here to determine correct dates, places of origin, and other peculiarities. Along the way, she discovered copies of issues not listed in previous guides, errors and omissions in other guides, clarified vague information, and sought to resolve problems of duplication. Taking the results of her work, Tim Murray sought to form all this information into a database to permit ease of sorting, formatting, and revision. ii Introduction This guide seeks to answer what, where, and when questions pertaining to African American Newspapers within the University of Georgia Libraries microfilm collection. It is divided into three sections. Title Listing Title, City, State, Date(s), Call Number State Listing State, City, Title, Date(s), Call Number Notes are included for some titles. Chronological Listing Year, Title, City, State, Call Number This edition is an attempt to bring information from a variety of sources into a single guide. Since the University of Georgia Libraries holds copies (on microfilm) of a variety of African American Newspapers, it seems reasonable that a comprehensive guide should be available. However, in the past, most guides have been those pertaining to specific collections of African American Newspapers and have often omitted those holdings outside of these collections. Hopefully this guide will help remedy that situation. Yet, this guide may not be complete. During our survey of the microfilm holdings, we may have missed titles or issues of titles. Much of this information was assembled by actually viewing the microfilm content; if a reel was missing during that survey period, we may not have realized it. The users of this guide are encouraged to let us know if errors or omissions have occurred. Of course, there is the possibility that new additions to our holdings may be made in the future which may make this guide obsolete or at least incomplete. Like those on whose efforts this edition builds, it is our hope that this guide will prove useful for some time to come. Leigh Ann Vey, William T.
