We are constantly on the hunt for talented curators, enlightened supporters, beautiful spaces and compelling exhibitions. But, in the end, nothing matters more than the collections themselves. Works of art are our life blood, and their acquisition ensures that our story – the story of art – can grow and evolve. To buy a work of art is to identify a piece of the ever-expanding jigsaw puzzle of our creativity. Like collectors everywhere, we buy with our eyes and our minds both. We need to feel the power of a sculpture or a drawing or of a piece of pottery. And at the same time we need to consider its significance, to think hard about what story it tells. That can be about the celebration of a great acknowledged talent – a task that should never be neglected or underestimated. And it can be about the joy of the unfamiliar. It’s always wonderful to vault the fence of the existing canon to discover pastures new.
