IN the s ummer of the year 1 89 2 I had the pleasure S w M e M of ho n to the arquess of But , at the British useum , a bilingual C optic and Ara bi c manuscript containing three unpublished Encomiums upon S aint Michael the Archangel Abba A O f A S by Theodosius , rchbishop lexandria , everus A Eustathius Trak e of ntioch , and , Bishop of , respectively ; O f L Z o uch e wh o w a s this manuscript is the property ord , S O kind as to allow me to take a complete copy of it S O 8 L far back as 1 85 . ord Bute enquired concernin g O f the contents the Encomiums , and regretted that these interesting documents w ere not accessible to the students C of the early history and literature of Egyptian hristianity , and subsequently he undertook to defray the expenses w connected ith the printing of the same . The most ardent lover of optic literature must confess that the lives of Coptic saints and the Encomiums upon them are generally too full Of miracles and some what monotonous exhortations to the listener n ow and reader , but the Encomiums published for the first time are interesting exceptions to the rule , for they w u contain narratives hich are f ll of importance , not only for the philologist and antiquary, but also for the student o - of c mparative folk lore and demonology . To the Coptic texts are appended th e complete narrative portions of A the rabic translation of the Encomiums , and the Ethiopic v e rsion o f the Encomium upon Saint Michael by Severus o f A e ntioch , dited from a venerable manuscript of the X Vth c e ntury in the British Museum .
