Milwaukee took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run double from Cole Sturgeon and an RBI single from Trey Martin. The Milkmen then scored nine runs in the second. Logan Trowbridge and Mikey Reynolds had RBI hits, while Christian Correa hit a grand slam home run. Christ Conley added a solo shot. Adam Brett Walker’s two-run single capped the inning. In the bottom of the third, the Milkmen made it 13-0 on an RBI double from Martin. Correa hit a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth. Conley’s RBI single in the fourth stretched the lead to 16-0. Correa hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to give Milwaukee a 19-0 lead, and tied an American Association single-game record with nine RBI. Kyle Martin drove in the Goldeyes’ lone run with an RBI single in the top of the eighth. Jorge Gonzalez started for the Goldeyes and took the loss, allowing nine earned runs on eight hits in 1.1 innings. Gonzalez walked three and struck out one. Martin pitched 1.2 scoreless innings for Winnipeg. Max Murphy also pitched 1.0 scoreless inning in relief. ALL-TIME AGAINST THE RAILCATS: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 112-88 all-time against the Gary SouthShore RailCats, including a 53-41 record in road games, and a 49-40 record at US Steel Yard. The RailCats joined the Northern League as an expansion team in 2002, and played all of their games on the road. The following year, the RailCats moved into their current home, US Steel Yard. Greg Tagert is in his 16 th season and 17th overall year as RailCats’ manager. Tagert guided the RailCats to the Northern League Championship Series five consecutive seasons from 2005-09, including Northern League titles in 2005 and 2007. The RailCats joined the American Association in 2011 along with the Goldeyes, Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, and Kansas City T-Bones. Tagert led the RailCats to their third championship in franchise history (and their first in the American Association) in 2013. Tagert also managed nine years in the Frontier League (Ohio Valley, Evansville, Dubois County, Kenosha, and Springfield/Ozark), and held the league’s all-time record for managerial wins upon departing for Gary SouthShore. During his first 24 years of managing professional baseball, Tagert has finished with a losing record just twice (2015, 2019). The RailCats were 57-43 in 2017, and won the American Association wild card on the final day of the regular season. In 2018, the RailCats won a franchise-record 59 games and a share of the American Association North Division title. On three occasions since joining the American Association, the RailCats have missed the playoffs by 2.0 games or less. The RailCats finished 1.0 game back of the Central Division lead in both 2011 and 2014, while missing by 2.0 games in 2016. The Goldeyes and RailCats have met twice in the playoffs (2007 and 2008) with the RailCats edging the Goldeyes in both series. Of the nine head-to-head playoff games between the two clubs, seven of them have been decided by three runs or less. The RailCats return to the American Association in 2021 after sitting out last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. SERIES MATCHUP: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 47-41, in fourth place in the American Association North Division, and 9.5 games behind the Chicago Dogs. The Goldeyes just split a four-game series with the Milwaukee Milkmen at Franklin Field. The Goldeyes are fourth in the American Association in hitting (.283), 10 th in pitching (5.60), and tied for fifth in fielding (.979). The Gary SouthShore RailCats are 34-56, in sixth place in the North, and eliminated from postseason contention. The RailCats just lost two of three to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Newman Outdoor Field. The RailCats are 11 th in the league in batting (.250), seventh in pitching (4.95), and 10 th in defence (.976). This is the last of four head-to-head series this season between Winnipeg and Gary SouthShore. The Goldeyes were 8-4 against the RailCats in 2019. TONIGHT’S STARTERS: The Goldeyes go with rookie PROJECTED UPCOMING PITCHING MATCHUPS right-hander Landen Bourassa who is 3-0 with a 1.47 ERA 8/28 at GAR: RHP Jose Vasquez (0-1, 2.89) vs. LHP Trevor Lubking (4-8, 5.06) in six starts this season. Bourassa took a no-decision vs. 8/29 at GAR: RHP Greg Harris (3-5, 6.61) vs. RHP John Sheaks (0-6, 5.29) Kane County in the second game of a double header last Saturday, allowing one earned run on nine hits in 4.2 innings. Bourassa walked none and struck out one. The Goldeyes won the game 10-1. Bourassa just finished his college career at the University of San Francisco (San Francisco, California) where he was 7-4 with a 2.88 ERA in 15 starts for the Dons as a sixth-year senior. Bourassa pitched four seasons at San Francisco from 2018-21, combining for a 16-9 record and a 2.93 ERA in 34 games, all of them as a starting pitcher. Prior to arriving at San Francisco, Bourassa pitched two seasons at Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon. Tonight will be Bourassa’s first career appearance against Gary SouthShore, as well as his first career appearance at US Steel Yard. The RailCats go with rookie right-hander Josh Vincent who is 2-4 with a 5.40 ERA in eight starts this season. Vincent took the loss vs. Chicago last Friday, allowing three earned runs on five hits in 4.1 innings. Vincent walked four and struck out four. Vincent has allowed four or fewer earned runs in six of his eight starts this season. Vincent was 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA in three starts earlier this season for the Pecos League’s Alpine Cowboys. Vincent finished his college career this past spring at Eastern Connecticut State University (Willimantic, Connecticut) where he was 6-2 with a 1.72 ERA in nine starts and one relief appearance as a senior. Vincent also pitched two seasons at Chowan University (Murfreesboro, North Carolina). Vincent is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in one career start against Winnipeg. Vincent is 0-2 with a 7.04 ERA in three career starts at US Steel Yard. GOLDEYES RETURN HOME: The Winnipeg Goldeyes returned to Shaw Park on Tuesday, August 3 rd with a 14-6 win over the Sioux City Explorers. It marked the Goldeyes’ first official home game since September 2 nd , 2019, which was a span of 701 days. A total of 20 games over 19 home dates were added to the remaining schedule. AMERICAN ASSOCIATION POSTSEASON FORMAT ADJUSTED: On August 4 th , the American Association announced an expanded playoff format. The top three teams in each division by winning percentage will now qualify for the postseason. The second- and third-place teams in each division will meet in a one-game playoff. The winner of the playoff game will face the winner from their own division in a best-of-five Division Series. The Division Series winners then meet in a best-of-five American Association Championship Series. The format originally called for the top two teams in each division qualifying for the postseason and immediately meeting in the Division Series. 99 GAMES: The second game of the scheduled double header on August 22 nd between the Winnipeg Goldeyes and Kane County Cougars was cancelled due to rain. As per American Association rules, since August 22 nd marked the final scheduled day of games between the clubs this season, the contest will not be made up. As a result, the Goldeyes can play a maximum of 99 games out of the 100 originally scheduled 2021. This marks only the second time in the last 11 years in which the Goldeyes will fall short of a complete regular season schedule. The Goldeyes last fell short in 2015 when they played 99 out of 100 games. Prior to that, the Goldeyes had not lost a game from their schedule since 2010, which was their final season in the Northern League. MARTIN SETS GOLDEYES RBI RECORD: Goldeyes’ first baseman Kyle Martin hit a pair of RBI doubles on August 12 th at Chicago before the game was suspended in the top of the ninth. The two RBI were Martin’s 89 th and 90 th of the 2021 season, which matched Juan Diaz’s franchise single-season record set in 2009. Once the game is completed, it will be recorded as having been played on August 12 th . The following night at Kane County, Martin hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth for the record-breaking 91 st RBI. EXTRA, EXTRA: Through 88 games, the Winnipeg Goldeyes are second in the American Association in doubles (184), and rank third in triples (23). The Goldeyes are on pace for 207 doubles and 26 triples.
