בס׳׳ד Rabbanit Alissa Thomas-Newborn April 2019 Parsha Plug: Parshat Metzora ויקרא יג:מו, יד:ב Vayikra 13:46, 14:2 יג:מו ָכּל־יְֵמ֞י א ֶשׁ֨ר ַהנֶּ֥גַע בּ֛וֹ יְִטָמ֖א .All the days the lesion is upon him, he shall remain tamei 13:46 ֲ ָטֵמ֣א ה֑וּא ָבָּד֣ד יֵֵשׁ֔ב ִמח֥וּץ ַלַֽמֲּחנֶ֖ה He is tamei; he shall dwell isolated; his dwelling shall be outside ֽמ ָוֹשֽׁבוֹ: יד:ב זֹ֤את ִתּהיֶה֙ ַתּוֹר֣ת the camp. 14:2 This shall be the law of the person afflicted with ֽ ְ ַהְמּצָֹר֔ע ְבּי֖וֹם ָֽטֳהָרת֑וֹ וְ ָהוּב֖א tzara'at, on the day of his cleansing: He shall be brought to the ֶא ַל־הכֵֹּֽהן: .kohen מלכים ב ז:ג–כ II Kings 7:3-20 ג ואַרָבּע֧ה אנִָשׁ֛ים הי֥וּ ְמצֹרִע֖ים ֶפַּ֣תח Now there were four men, stricken with zaraat, at the 3 ְ ְ ָ ֲ ָ ָ ַה ָשַּׁ֑ער וַיֹּֽ ְאמרוּ֙ ִא֣ישׁ ֶא ֵל־רֵע֔הוּ ָמ֗ה ֲאנְַ֛חנוּ entrance of the gate. And they said to each other, "Why are ְישִׁב֥ים פֹּ֖ה ַע ָד־מתנוּ: ד ִא ַם־אָמרנוּ֩ נָב֨וֹא we sitting here until we die? 4 If we say that we will come ֽ ְ ְ ָהִע֜יר וְָהָרָע֚ב ָבִּעיר֙ וַָמְ֣תנוּ ָשׁ֔ם וְִאם־יַָשְׁ֥בנוּ ,into the city, with the famine in the city, we will die there פֹ֖ה וָָמְ֑תנוּ וְַעָתּ֗ה ְלכוּ֙ וְנְִפָּלה֙ ֶא ַל־מֲחנֵ֣ה and if we stay here we will die. So now, let us go and let us ֲאָר֔ם ִאם־יְַחיֻּ֣נוּ נְִֽחיֶ֔ה וְִאם־יְִמ ֻית֖נוּ וָָֽמְתנוּ: ,defect to the Aramean camp. If they spare us we will live ה וַיָּק֣וּמוּ ַבנֶֶּ֔שׁף לב֖וֹא א ַל־מחנֵ֣ה אר֑ם and if they kill us we will die." 5 And they arose in the ָ ֶ ֲ ֲ ָ וַיָּבֹ֗אוּ ַע ְד־קֵצה֙ ַמֲחנֵ֣ה ֲאָר֔ם וְִהנֵּ֥ה evening to come to the Aramean camp. And they came to ֵא ָין־שׁ֖ם ִאישׁ: ו וַאדֹ–נָ֞י ִה ְשִׁמ֣ ַיע | the edge of the Aramean camp, and behold, no one was ֽ ֽ א ַת־מחנֵ֣ה אר֗ם ק֥וֹל רֶ֙כב֙ ק֣וֹל ס֔וּס ק֖וֹל there. 6 Now the Lord had caused the Aramean camp to ֶ ֲ ֲ ָ ֶ ַח֣יִל גָּד֑וֹל וַיֹּ ְאמר֞וּ ִא֣ישׁ ֶא ִל־אָח֗יו ִהנֵּ֣ה hear the sound of chariots and the sound of horses, the ָֽשַֹכ ָר־עֵלינוּ֩ ֶמֶ֨לְך יְִשָׂרֵא֜ל ֶא ַת־מְלֵכ֧י ,sound of a great army. And they said to one another ַהִחִתּ֛ים וא ַת־מלֵכ֥י ִמְצַר֖יִם לב֥וֹא עֵלינוּ: ז Behold, the king of Israel has hired for us the kings of the" ְֶ ְ ָ ָֽ וַיָּקוּמוּ֘ וַיָּנ֣וּסוּ ַבנֶֶּשׁף֒ וַיַַּעזב֣וּ את־אָהֵליה֗ם Hittites and the kings of the Egyptians to attack us." 7 And ְ ֶ ֳ ֶ וְֶא ֽת־ס ֵוּס ֶיהם֙ וְֶא ֲת־חמ֣ ֵֹר ֶיה֔ם ַֽהַמֲּחנֶ֖ה they picked themselves up and fled at dusk, leaving behind ַכּא ֶשׁ ִר־ה֑יא וַיָּנֻ֖סוּ אל־נְַפ ָשׁם: ח וַיָּבֹאוּ֩ their tents, their horses, and their donkeys, the camp as it ֲ ֶ ֽ ַהְמצֹרִע֨ים הֵא֜לּה ַעד־קֵצ֣ה ַהַמּחנֶ֗ה was, and they fled for their lives. 8 Now these metzoraim ֽ ָ ָ ֶ ְ ֽ ֲ וַיָּבֹ֜אוּ ֶאל־א֚ ֶֹהל ֶאָחד֙ וַיֹּ ְאכל֣וּ וַיְִּשׁתּ֔וּ came up to the edge of the camp, entered one tent, ate and וַיְִּשׂא֣וּ ִמ ָשּׁ֗ם ֶכֶּ֚סף וְזָָהב֙ ְוּבגִָד֔ים וַיְֵּלכ֖וּ ,drank, and carried off from there silver, gold, and clothing וַיְַּטִמ֑נוּ וַיָֻּשׁ֗בוּ וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ ֶאל־א֣ ֶֹהל ֵאַח֔ר and they went and hid them. And they returned and entered וַיְִּשׂא֣וּ ִמ ָשּׁ֔ם וַיֵּלכ֖וּ וַיְַּטִמנוּ: ט וַיֹּ ְאמרוּ֩ ִא֨ישׁ another tent, and carried off from there, and they went and ְ ֽ א ֵל־רֵע֜הוּ לֹ ֵא־כ֣ן | אנַ֣חנוּ עִֹשֹ֗ים ַהיּ֚וֹם hid them. 9 Now one said to another, "We are not doing ֶ ֽ ֲ ְ ַהזֶּה֙ ְיוֹם־בּ ָשׂר֣ה ה֔וּא וֲַאנְַ֣חנוּ ַמְח ִשׁ֗ים right. This day is a day of good news, yet we are keeping וְִחִכּ֛ינוּ ַעד־א֥וֹר ַהבּ֖ ֶֹקר ְוּמָצאָ֣נוּ ָעו֑וֹן ,quiet. If we wait until daybreak, we will incur guilt. Now וַעתּה֙ לכ֣וּ ונָבֹ֔אָה ונַגִּ֖ידה ֵבּ֥ית ַהֶמּלך: י let us go and come and relate this in the king's palace." 10 ְ ָ ְ ְ ְ ָ ְֶֽ וַיָּבֹ֗אוּ וַֽיְִּקְראוּ֘ ֶאל־שֵֹׁע֣ר ָהִעיר֒ וַיַּגִּ֚ידוּ And they came and called to the gatekeepers of the city and ָלֶהם֙ ֵלאמֹ֔ר ָבּאנוּ ֶא ַל־מֲחנֵ֣ה ֲאָר֔ם וְִהנֵּ֥ה told them, saying, "We came to the Aramean camp, and ֵֽא ָין־שׁ֛ם ִא֖ישׁ וְק֣וֹל ָאָד֑ם ִכּ֣י ִא ַם־הסּ֚וּס behold there is no man there nor the sound of a human, but אָסוּר֙ וְַהֲחמ֣וֹר אָס֔וּר וְאָֹהִל֖ים the horses are tethered and the donkeys are tethered, and ַכּא ֶשׁ ֵר־הָמּה: יא וַיִּקר֖א ַה ֽשֹּׁעִר֑ים וַיַּגִּ֕ידוּ the tents are as they were." 11 And he called the ֲ ֽ ְ ָ ֲ ֵבּ֥ית ַהֶמּ֖לך ְפּנִ ָימה: יב וַיָּ֨קם ַהֶמּ֜לך ַל֗יְלה .gatekeepers; and they related it to the king's palace inside ְֶ ֽ ָ ְֶ ָ וַיּ֙ ֶֹאמר֙ אל־עָבד֔יו אָגִּידה־נָּ֣א לֶכ֔ם ֵא֛ת ,And the king arose at night and said to his servants 12 ֶ ֲ ָ ֽ ָ ָ ֲא ֶשׁ ָר־ע֥שׂוּ ָל֖נוּ ֲאָר֑ם יְָדע֞וּ ִכּ ְי־רֵעִב֣ים .Now I will tell you what the Arameans have done to us" בס׳׳ד Rabbanit Alissa Thomas-Newborn April 2019 ֲאנְַ֗חנוּ וַיְֵּצא֚וּ ִמ ַֽן־הַמֲּחנֶה֙ ְלֵהָחֵב֚ה ַב ָשֶּׂדה֙ They know that we are hungry. So they left the camp to (כתיב ַב ָהשֶּׂדה֙) ֵלאמֹ֔ר ִֽכּי־יְֵצא֚וּ ,hide in the field, saying, 'When they come out of the city ִמן־הִעיר֙ ונִתְפּ ֵשֹ֣ם ַחיִּ֔ים ואל־הִע֖יר נָֽבֹא: we will seize them alive and enter the city.'" 13 Now one of ָ ְ ְ ְֶ ָ יג וַיַַּען֩ אח֨ד ֵמעָבד֜יו וַיּ֗ ֶֹאמר ויִקחוּ־נָ֞א his servants called out and said, "Let them take now five of ֶ ָ ֲ ָ ְ ְ ֲחִמ ָשּׁ֣ה ִמ ַן־ה ִסּוּסים֘ ַֽהנְִּשׁ ִאָרים֘ ֲא ֶשׁ֣ר the remaining horses that are left there. Behold, they are נְִשֲׁא ָרוּ־בהּ֒ ִהנָּ֗ם ְכָּכ ֲל־המ֚וֹן (כתיב like all the multitude of Israel that are left there, behold ֲההמ֚וֹן) יְִשָׂרֵאל֙ ֲא ֶשׁ֣ר נְִשֲׁא ָרוּ־ב֔הּ ִהנָּ֕ם ;they are like all the multitude of Israel that have perished ְכָּכל־המ֥וֹן יְִשׂרֵא֖ל א ֶשׁר־תּ֑מּוּ ונְִשׁלח֖ה and let us send and we will see." 14 So they took two riders ֲ ָ ֲ ָ ְ ְָ ונִראה: יד וַיִּקח֕וּ ְשׁנֵ֖י רֶ֣כב ִסוּס֑ים וַיְִּשַׁל֨ח ,of horses, and the king sent them after the Aramean camp ְ ְ ֶֽ ְ ֶ ַהֶמּ֜לך אַחֵר֧י ַמחנֵה־אר֛ם ֵלאמֹ֖ר לכ֥וּ saying, "Go and see." 15 And they followed them up to the ְֶ ֲ ֲֽ ֲ ָ ְ וּראוּ: טו וַיֵּלכ֣וּ אַחֵריהם֘ ַע ַד־היַּרֵדּן֒ וִהנֵּ֣ה Jordan, and behold all the way was full of garments and ְ ֽ ְ ֲ ֶ ְ ְ ָכ ַל־הֶדֶּ֗רְך ְמֵלאָ֚ה ְבגִָדים֙ וְֵכִל֔ים vessels that the Arameans had cast off in their haste; and א ֶשׁ ִר־ה ְשִׁל֥יכוּ אר֖ם ְבּחְפז֑ם (כתיב the messengers returned and related it to the king. 16 And ֲ ֲ ָ ָ ָ ְבּ ָהחְפזָ֑ם) וַיָֻּשׁ֙בוּ֙ ַהַמְּל ִאָכ֔ים וַיַּגִּ֖דוּ ַלֶֽמֶּלְך: the people went out and plundered the Aramean camp; and טז וַיֵֵּצ֣א הע֔ם וַיָּבֹ֕זּוּ ֵא֖ת ַמחנֵ֣ה אר֑ם וַיְִה֨י a seah of fine flour was sold for a shekel and two seahs of ָָ ֲ ֲ ָ ְסאָה־ס֜ ֶֹלת ְבּ ֶשֶׁ֗קל וְָס ַאת֧יִם ְשׂעִֹר֛ים barley were sold for a shekel, according to the word of the ְבּ ֶשׁ֖קל ִכּדַב֥ר ה׳: יז וַהֶמּלך֩ ִהְפק֨יד Lord. 17 Now the king appointed the officer upon whose ֶ ְ ְ ְֶ ִ ֶא ַת־ה ָשִּׁל֜ישׁ ֲא ֶשׁר־נְִשָׁע֚ן ַעל־יָדוֹ֙ hand he leaned, over the gate, and the people trampled him ַע ַל־ה ַשַּׁ֔ער וַיְִּרְמֻס֧הוּ ָהָע֛ם ַבּ ַשַּׁ֖ער וַיָּמֹ֑ת and he died, as the man of God had spoken, which he spoke ַכּא ֶשׁ֚ר ִדֶּבּר֙ ִא֣ישׁ האלֹקים א ֶשׁ֣ר ִדֶּבּ֔ר when the king had come down to him. 18 And it was when ֲ ָ ֱ ֲ ְבּר֥דת ַהֶמּ֖לך ֵאליו: יח וַיְִה֗י ְכַּדֵבּר֙ ִא֣ישׁ the man of God had spoken to the king, saying, "Two seahs ֶֶ ְֶ ָֽ ָהֱאלֹקים ֶא ַל־הֶמֶּ֖לְך ֵלאמֹ֑ר ָס ַאת֨יִם of barley will be sold for a shekel and a seah of fine flour ְשׂעִֹר֜ים ְבּ ֶשֶׁ֗קל וְּֽסאָה־ס֙ ֶֹלת֙ ְבּ ֶשֶׁ֔קל יְִהיֶה֙ .",will be sold at this time tomorrow in the gate of Samaria ָכֵּע֣ת ָמח֔ר ְבּ ַשַׁ֖ער שְֹׁמרוֹן: יט וַיַַּ֨ען ,That the officer answered the man of God and said 19 ָ ֽ ַה ָשִּׁל֜ישׁ ֶא ִת־א֣ישׁ ָהֱאלֹקים֘ וַיֹּ ַאמר֒ וְִהנֵּ֣ה ה׳ And behold, if God makes windows in the sky, will this" עֶֹשֹ֚ה ֲאֻרבּוֹת֙ ַבּ ָשַּׁמ֔יִם ֲהיְִהיֶ֖ה ַכָּדָּב֣ר ַהזֶּ֑ה thing come about?" And he said, "Behold you will see it וַיּ֗ ֶֹאמר ִהנְּך֚ רֹאה֙ ְבֵּעינֶ֔יך ִוּמ ָשּׁ֖ם לֹ֥א with your own eyes, yet you shall not eat therefrom." 20 ָ ֶ ָ תֹ ֵאכל: כ וַיְִהי־ל֖וֹ ֵכּ֑ן וַיִּרְמס֨וּ אֹת֥וֹ הע֛ם And so it happened to him, that the people trampled him in ֽ ְ ָָ ַבּ ַשַּׁ֖ער וַיָּֽמֹת: .the gate, and he died סנהדרין קז: Sanhedrin 107b גחזי דכתיב וילך אלישע The Mishna states that Gehazi, the attendant of Elisha, has no share דמשק להיכא אזל א"ר יוחנן in the World-to-Come. The Gemara explains that this is as it is שהלך להחזיר גחזי בתשובה written: And Elisha went to Damascus (see II Kings 8:7). Where did ולא חזר אמר לו חזור בך he go, and for what purpose? Rabbi Yoḥanan says: He went to cause אמר לו כך מקובלני ממך .Gehazi to repent, but he did not repent. Elisha said to him: Repent החוטא ומחטיא את הרבים :Gehazi said to him: This is the tradition that I received from you אין מספיקין בידו לעשות Whoever sins and causes the masses to sin is not given the תשובה מאי עבד איכא ?opportunity to repent.
