The portal will close automatically at 11 PM Central European Time (5 PM EST/4PM CST/3PM MTN/2PM PST) on the deadline date. Applicants are advised to start the application process at least one week before the closing date. Please ensure we receive the paper application no later than one week after the portal deadline (one-sided, not stapled). Your application is only complete when we have received both your electronic and paper application. All other foreign nationals may need to apply via a different DAAD office. • Recent BA/BS or MA/MS graduates who completed their last degree no longer than 6 years ago. • US/Canadian students in the first year of a Master’s degree program in Germany may apply to fund their second year. • Applicants may not have been living in Germany for more than 15 consecutive months by the time of application deadline. It is based on an interview of about an hour that the liaison lecturer (appointed by the Heinrich Böll Foundation) holds with you, as a rule, at the lecturer’s place of residence in Germany. In exceptional cases the liaison lecturer may agree to hold a telephone interview Stage 3: Selection workshop On the basis of the liaison lecturers’ and other expert reports and the quality of the exposé applicants will be invited to attend the selection workshop. The selection workshop consists of a structured one-to-one interview and a group discussion. The main focus of the workshop will be to assess the applicants’ personal abilities. Required Documents Page 7 • Application form (Bewerbungsbogen Studienstipendium) • High school diploma (can be submitted in English) • A list of study certificates to date if you have already commenced your studies (not relevant if you haven’t started your studies already) • Certified copy of your bachelor’s degree, along with an explanation of the grading if it differs from the German system • Immatriculation certificate (if you have one) • Written proof of German language proficiency (Level DSH 2 or „TestDaF“ Level B2) • A third-party reference on your social engagement • An expert reference from a university or college lecturer, or for school leavers from a schoolteacher Important Notes • Please upload complete application documents only; incomplete application documents cannot be processed. • References sent to the Heinrich Böll Foundation by the referees directly must also arrive by the respective application deadline. • Personal and expert references by university lecturers must contain the referee’s original signature. Stage 2: Preselection A pre-selection will be made on the basis of the application documents. In doing so, care is taken that the documents correspond to the application requirements and the applicants have a real chance in the subsequent selection process. Anyone who has successfully completed this step receives an invitation to the selection conference. Stage 3: Selection Conference Successful application meet one-on-one with the members of the Selection Committee, which consists of persons from business, politics and science and research. They are assessed by the members of the independent selection committee in an objective procedure according to their professional performance, their personality and their civil society commitment, with equal weighting for all three criteria. Stage 4: Decision Within two weeks you will be informed by e-mail about the results and invited to the introductory event for scholarship recipients to Potsdam. Page 9 Required Documents • German-style resume (Lebenslauf) • Current passport • High school diploma (with translation) • Certified copy of your bachelor’s degree, along with an explanation of the grading if it differs from the German system • Acceptance letter from a university or evidence that you have applied to an academic program and are currently in the application process • Two references from university professors or colleagues (both can be from your bachelor studies). Should not be written more than four months prior the completion of the application. All documents must be submitted in German or with translations. Selection criteria The Friedrich Baumann Foundation seeks to provide particularly talented young men and women who did not plan to continue their education with essential qualifications to pursue liberal-oriented goals and community engagement. There are no age requirements for scholarship programs. Your personality and your socio- political commitment are just as important to us as our excellent academic and academic performance.
