PLANNED GIVING If you would like to include the Toledo Sail & Power Squadron in your estate plan or provide another kind of gift, please contact P/C Haynes Lee, Jr., AP. This is a great way to get to know other members of the squadron. Special for Trailer Boaters From Don Leutz Inside Passage from Conway (near Petoskey, MI) to Cheboygan, MI and out to Mackinac Island if weather permits. Our plan is to be up there on Friday night, August 8th and start boating the inside passage Saturday morning. It is mostly protected waters. You spend time on Crooked Lake, Pickerel Lake, The Indian River, Burt Lake, Hay Lake, Mullet Lake, The Black River, the Cheboygan River. You go through two locks. Burt and Mullet are big lakes, but the way they are navigated, you can always hug the lee shore if it blows up. This will get us to Cheboygan Saturday night. At that point—depending upon weather—we may head out into the Straits of Mackinac around Mackinac Island and the bridge, or we may head back to Conway. In any event, we plan to be back to Conway no later than Sunday evening. Those that wish could leave for Conway Sunday morning and with a straight shot and no loitering could be out of the water and trailering for home by Sunday afternoon. There are hotels/motels at each end of the trip which have docks. They do not allow you to stay on your boat. You must get a room. We have an open bowrider, so a hotel room is our preference. If you wish to stay on your own boat, there are two municipal marinas within a half mile of the hotels. There are also a few waterfront B&B's where you can moor and many waterfront restaurants and marinas along the way. We plan to trailer to Traverse Bay on Monday morning, do a little boating and hit the Mission Point wineries by car. We will head back to Toledo Tuesday morning, possibly taking a leisurely route down the west side of the state. I invite you to any or all of the trip. Please contact me if you are in- terested so I can figure out the hotel/motel situation. I have other details about GPS, charts, etc. Don Leutz [email protected] Congratulations—They Passed the Course!! At the beginning of the year, Toledo squadron made national news when our Education Officer P/C Jim Sommers was awarded the prestigious Chapman Award. Now, due to the coordinated efforts of PR Chairman Joyce Mease, P/C Jim Balogh, P/C Sommers, Capt. Don Dietz and many others, we have been invited to make a presentation at the National Governing Board meeting in September. National was very impressed with our activities during Safe Boating Week and also with the live radio broadcast on WTOD on May 31st. They’ve asked us to share our strategies, techniques and PR experiences. We’ll be participating in the PR and Marketing session on Friday morning, September 5th. National Governing Board meeting this year is not in Texas or California or Florida; it’s right in our backyard, Detroit. This is really another big reason for all Toledo squadron members to attend. Have dinner Saturday night with 500 other squadron members from all over the country. See me, or go to www.USPS.org for more details and registration forms. -Even closer to home and sooner: District 29 Summer Council and Rendezvous . TYC, August 15-17. Friday the 15th will be dockside cocktail party starting at 8 P.M. Saturday meeting will be aboard a small cruise ship and includes a cruise of Maumee Bay. A tasty box lunch will be available for $8 or BYOL (bring your own lunch).
