2019 ~ 2020 Annual Report 2019 — 2020 ANNUAL REPORT Letter from Fr. Michael P. Caruso, S.J., President Dear Friends, As I compose this letter it has been a few months now since I have turned over the presidential reins to the very capable hands of Mr. John Chandler. There are several things that come to my mind as I think about the past ten years, and this past year in particular. If there is one word to capture what is in my heart, it would be ‘gratitude.’ It has been a great privilege to work with and for the young people of Saint Ignatius College Prep. You are reading this bulletin because you too believe in this great educational project and have chosen to support it in so many ways. We could not deliver this Catholic education in the Jesuit tradition without our families and loyal alumni and friends. As I often told people over the years, “…it takes a lot of money to run an excellent school like this, but it is worth the investment.” Along with our current school families, it has been a tremendous joy to know the alumni and friends of the school. Over my ten years, you have welcomed me into this dynamic community, and I feel very blessed by your friendship. The Corona pandemic jettisoned graduation and several of our 150th anniversary celebrations, but our school remains strong and resilient, prepared to face the future. Reading our school’s history and learning about the various challenges that have been faced through the decades, we can be confident, with God’s grace and our faith, that a bright future is ahead. Our Board of Trustees delivered an inspired choice for the 31st President of our school in Mr. John Chandler. I could not have been happier with John’s appointment. His commitment to the Catholic mission, Jesuit educational excellence, and devotion to our alumni is without parallel. I could not imagine anyone better walking into the school at this complicated time, with all of the challenges, and leading with faith, hope, and love as John will [and always has]. I am sure that you share with me a feeling of confidence in John’s vision and determination to strengthen Saint Ignatius College Prep. The Annual Report is an Honor Roll of everyone who played a part in a successful year. Your support is as critical as ever. On behalf of our school community, I thank you for all that you have done to support this great educational project at 1076 West Roosevelt Road. Let us keep one another in prayer, while we look to a future with confidence for our beloved school! AMDG! Fr. Michael P. Caruso, SJ 2 2019 — 2020 ANNUAL REPORT Letter from Patrick J. Nash ’89, 2019-20 Board of Trustees Chairman Dear Partners for the Mission of Saint Ignatius College Prep, Each year, as we prepare the annual report, I am reminded of the special generosity of each of you as you support Saint Ignatius College Prep so thoughtfully with your gifts and prayers. Today’s Saint Ignatius could not exist to form our many young women and men spiritually, academically, and personally without your partnership. During these challenging economic times, when the needs of our students have grown and so many worthy organizations seek support, you heed the call to share your valuable resources with others. As you review the annual report, remember that the assessment of our year is not just statistics, charts and figures, but the many ways your gifting has assisted us. Many of you supported the ever-growing need for tuition assistance. Our parents have sustained the Parent Commitment Program. Countless volunteer hours made transformational differences around the campus. Our alums have stepped up to fill “gaps” as mentors and generous supporters of a wide range of financial aid programs from tuition to books to clothing for our students. This past year we said goodbye to our President Fr. Michael Caruso, S.J., and honored him with generous gifting to the school for all that he did to strengthen our school’s commitment to its Jesuit Catholic identity. Thank you for those expressions of gratitude for his leadership. While our fiscal year passes quickly, your on-going support transforms our students for a lifetime. I remain grateful for the outpouring of support for our school. My fellow Trustees extend their gratitude for the many things that you make possible for our students. With deepest gratitude, Patrick J. Nash ’89 Chairman of the Board of Trustees 3 2019 — 2020 ANNUAL REPORT Letter from John J. Chandler, Vice President of Development and Operations Dear Members of the Saint Ignatius College Prep Community, Last year, at this time we were writing to thank you for your generous support of our students and shared with you the plans for the upcoming Sesquicentennial celebration to celebrate our mission, founded in Chicago by the immigrant Jesuit, Fr. Arnold Damen, SJ in 1869. We could not have predicted then, that it would not only be a year of great joy, but also one of great challenge and sadness. Peering back through our history we have found and have been reminded that the school has survived and has been a beacon of hope through the Great Chicago Fire, the labor unrest of the 1890s, the Spanish Flu epidemic, the Great Depression, two World Wars, and the moral and racial issues of the last half century. During each period, our Jesuit leaders, our lay colleagues, and generous supporters, such as you, have permitted the school to educate minds, strengthen souls and shape hearts, all for the Greater Glory of God. Our accomplishments and stories are your stories. Whether you are a sixth generation Ignatius family or if you have just connected with us for the first time, your partnership transforms lives each and every day. While the annual report is a compendium and record of your gifts to us, it does not do justice to the outcomes of your gifting. For example, you supported a young woman from Somalia, who was the sole support for her extended immigrant family. You provided her with an education, funding for books, an iPad, and crucial living expenses to make sure that she could concentrate on her education. When she graduated this spring she was offered a full scholarship at a number of universities: Harvard, Princeton and Santa Clara, just to name a few. One story, the result of many gifts. Each donation, modest or large, has the power to provide a future for our students. For us at school, among the saddest moments this spring was not being able to host our Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation – an important rite of passage for our graduating seniors. While Fr. Caruso, my colleagues, and I delivered diplomas to the homes of each graduate, we were struck by the genuine gratitude that we discovered. It is that same deep gratitude that we extend to each of you. You have made sacrifices to support the educational and faith community here at 1076. We could not have a stronger and more committed group of benefactors than you. Join me in thanking our President, Fr. Michael Caruso, SJ for his ten years of exemplary leadership and Fr. Lukas Laniauskas, SJ for his five years as the VP of Mission Integration and Implementation. It is my prayer that our Lord and His blessed mother watch over your family and keep them healthy. We are most humbled by your prayers and your gifts. Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, John J.
