This is the fifth meeting between Karlovic and Monfils (tied 2-2), the second on hard courts. Karlovic won the previous hard court meeting in 2009 ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati in a third set tie-break. The winner will capture a first ATP World Tour 500 level title, making it their biggest career crown. Karlovic leads the tournament with 80 aces and he has held serve all 43 games (saving 10 break pts.). Nick Kyrgios is the last ATP World Tour winner without losing serve (held 47 games) in Marseille in February. The big-serving Croat enters on an eight-match winning streak after capturing the Newport title last Sunday (d. Muller). At 37 years, 4 months, Karlovic is attempting to become the oldest player to win ATP World Tour singles titles in back-to-back weeks since Ken Rosewall (at 38 years, 11 mons.) won in Osaka and Tokyo in October 1973. Karlovic is appearing in his first Citi Open final and with a title he would become the oldest champion in tournament history. Jimmy Connors was 35 years, 10 mons. in 1988 when he won the title (d. Gomez). Karlovic began the season with an 0-6 mark but has compiled a 16-7 match record in the past nine tournaments. He is 7-8 lifetime in ATP World Tour finals and he’s attempting to win two titles in the same season for the first time since 2007 when he won a personal-best three titles. Monfils has only lost serve once en route to the final, holding 36 of 37 games. He leads the tournament in return games won (15 of 39, 38%). He is appearing in his first Citi Open final since his last visit five years ago (l. to Stepanek). He is making his third final appearance of the season and 25th career ATP World Tour final showing (5-19). He is trying to capture his first ATP World Tour title outside Europe and his last title came in Montpellier in February 2014 (d. Gasquet). This is Monfils’ third ATP World Tour final in the U.S. (’11 Washington, ’13 Winston-Salem). Arnaud Clement is the last Frenchman to win the Washington title in 2006 (d. Murray).
