Coastal Engineering - Causing Conflict

geographyalltheway.com - Online Geography Resources Coastal Engineering - Causing Conflict Mappleton is a village on the Holderness coast, north-east United Kingdom. In 1991, coastal engineering strategies were put in place to protect the village from coastal erosion. The Holderness coastline is one of the most rapidly eroding areas of the UK. The cliffs have been eroding at a rate of 2.9 metres per year. The building of the coastal engineering strategies caused controversy due to the slowing of the rate of erosion to the north of the rock groyne and the possible speeding up of the rate of erosion to the south. • One large boulder groyne using stone imported from Norway. • Cost £2 million. • Only extends for 500 metres across front of village. • Future erosion will mean the village will survive on its own headland. • The cliff angle has been reduced in angle of behind the defences to prevent further slumping of the cliff face. • Rock armour has been placed along the cliff foot. 1 of 2 http://www.geographyalltheway.com/ geographyalltheway.com - Online Geography Resources Farmer A who has a pastoral agriculture business plus he rents out several of the barns he has converted on his farm to tourists.
