The purpose of this handbook is to introduce the structure and function of the 163-year old Hungarian Defence Forces and to show how we preserved our millennial military traditions. In the first six months of 2011 Hungary holds the pre- sidency of the Council of the European Union. This is the first occasion since becoming member of the EU thus we would like to take this opportunity to introduce our selves to the peoples of the Union. Countries assuming the rotating presidency always get special attention, so during this period we are in the focus of European pub- lic opinion and of the nations of the Union. Successfully accomplishing the tasks of the rotating presidency can substantially enhance our prestige, so like the whole Hungarian Government the Ministry of Defence is also doing its best to deliver an outstanding performance. 5 FACTS AND FIGURES ON THE HUNGARIAN DEFENCE FORCES Defence policy – inter alia – in the international arms control regime of Together for security the UN and the OSCE, in the initiatives in the Central, Eastern and South-Eastern European region and in the traditional bilateral cooperation aiming at promoting The security of the Republic of Hungary is based on the neighbourliness. national forces, the European and Euro-Atlantic integ - ration and on other forms of international cooperation.
