Suddenly, the earth started to shake. The building began to crumble around him. Wismond dove under a desk, which protected him from falling rubble. His quick action saved his life, but he was now trapped in a small space under the destroyed building. While he was trapped, Wismond kept up his strength by drinking soda and eating potato chips that he found in the ruined store. :8E8;8 Miami, Florida LE@K<; >lc]f] JK8K<J D\o`Zf K?< N 98?8D8J D<O@:F W E S 8kcXek`Z :L98 FZ\Xe The country of Haiti is located K?< @JC8E; F= ?@JG8E@FC8 on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea. When the earth began shaking, she was inside a house in Dabonne, a town 12 miles (19 km) south of Port-au-Prince. As the building shook, huge pieces of concrete fell onto her legs. Christa’s friend Wenson Georges helped move the concrete off her. Then he carried Christa on a motorcycle to find help. Because she was an American citizen, Christa was evacuated to the United States for treatment. On January 13, Christa waits to be flown to Miami, Florida, for medical treatment. More than 230,000 people were killed as structures collapsed. Many more were trapped under debris, some of them seriously injured. Among the buried survivors was a young man named Wismond who had been working in a small shop inside a hotel. After the quake hit, he found himself trapped under rubble for almost 11 days. Luckily, countries and organizations around the world rushed to bring aid to Haiti. Rescuers and doctors arrived by air and sea along with medical supplies, food, and clean water. Read how their life-saving efforts helped Wismond and others escape death in this stirring account of one of the worst disasters of all time.
