Enriching our understanding of Giovanna Garzoni (1600 Ascoli Piceno-1670 Rome), this exhibition gathers over 100 objects, including painted miniatures, Asian porcelains, ink drawings, bronze sculptures, textile works, ivories, books, andnaturalia . Displaying Garzoni's astounding range of artistic production alongside the objects that inspired her, the exhibition reveals how Garzoni’s geographic imagination spanned the entire globe. Her compositions stage marvelous encounters between objects of diverse origins, including Central American murex shells, Mexican marigolds, South African lilies, Ming porcelain, and an English lapdog. Her portraits and drawings demonstrate her own wide travels: to Venice where she met Artemisia Gentileschi, to Rome where she met Cassiano dal Pozzo, to Turin where she met the Ethiopian pretender Zaga Christ, to London where she met Inigo Jones, to Paris where she met Cardinal Richelieu, and of course to Florence, where she lived nearly a decade working for her most important patrons, the Medici grand dukes. As a special feature, this exhibition reconstructs the Kunstkammer of Grand Duchess Vittoria della Rovere, in which more than 20 of Garzoni's still lifes were prominently displayed.
