Sing a Long Great Lakes Cruising Club 1. Swanee River (C) Chorus Way down upon the Swanee River, Far, far away There’s where my heart is turning ever, That’s where the old folks stay. All the world is sad and dreary. Ev’rywhere I roam. Old brother how my heart grows weary, Far from the old folks at home. Chorus All up and down the whole creation, Sadly I roam, Still longing for the old plantation, And for the old folks at home. Chorus All round the little farm I wandered, When I was young. Then many happy days I squandered, Many the songs I sung. Chorus One little hut among the bushes, One that I love; Still sadly to my memory rushes, No matter where I rove. Chorus When will I see the bees a-humming, All round the comb? When will I hear the banjos strumming Down in my good old home? Chorus 2. Shine On Harvest Moon (G) The night was mighty dark so you could hardly see The moon refused to shine Couple sitting underneath the will tree for love they pine. Little maid was sort of ‘fraid of darkness So she said, I guess I’ll go Now boy began to sign, looked up at the sky And told the moon this little tale of woe. Chorus Oh, shine on, shine on, Harvest Moon, up in the sky. I ain’t had no lovin’ since January, February, June or July. Snow time ain’t no time to stay outdoors and spoon So shine on, shine on, Harvest Moon, For me and my gal. 3. In the Good Old Summertime (G) In the good old summertime, In the good old summertime. Strolling through the shady lanes With your baby mine. You hold her hand and she hold yours, And that’s a very good sign That she’s your tootsey-wootsey In the good old summertime. 4. Red River Valley (G) From this valley they say you are going, We will miss your bright eyes and sweet smile, For they say you are taking the sunshine That brightens our pathway a while. Chorus Come and sit by my side if you love me, Do not hasten to bid me adieu, But remember the Red River Valley And the girl who has loved you so true. From this valley they say you are going, When you go, may your darling go, too? Would you leave her alone, unprotected, When she love no other but you? Chorus As you go to your home by the ocean, May you never forget those sweet hours That we spent in the Red River Valley And the love we exchanged ‘mid the flow’rs. Chorus 5. Red River Galley (G) From this galley you say you are leaving You’re fed up with the pots and the pans And the burners that never are working And the food that all comes out of cans Chorus Come and sit by my side if you love me Do not hasten to bid me adieu Just remember the good times at sea dear even though we both know they are few Do not grieve while you’re having such fun dear, T’won’t be long till the wind will die down And the waves will subside I am sure dear, Then perhaps we can dinghy to town Chorus Clean the boat one more time before going, Swab the deck, oil the teak, wax the hull When you look at all these fun things You’ve been doing, You can see cruising life’s never dull! Chorus O, please stay till the end of the season, I know I can’t cope if you’re not here And for this more than any other reason, When you’re gone then who’ll fetch my beer Chorus You say your mother is coming to visit, Sleeping up in the V berth with you If she’s still here three days from tomorrow, I’ll be leaving this boat before you! Chorus 6. On Top Of Old Smoky (C) On top of old Smoky, all covered with snow, I lost my true lover from courting so slow. Now courting is pleasure, And parting is grief And a false hearted lover is worse than a thief. Say a thief will just rob you and take what you have But a false hearted lover will lead you to the grave. And the grave will decay you and turn you to dust Not one goy in a hundred a poor girl can trust. They’ll hug you and kiss you and tell you more lies Than the cross-ties on the railroad or the stars in the skies. So come all you young maidens and listen to me Never place you affection on a green willow tree. For the leaves they will wither and the roots they will die You’ll all be forsaken and never know why. On top of Old Smoky all covered with snow I lost my true lover from courting too slow. 7. Down in the Valley (C) Down in the valley, valley so low, Hear the wind blow, dear, hear the wind blow, Hang you head over, hear the wind blow Roses love sunshine, Violets love dew, Know I love you dear, know I love you, Angels in heaven know I love you. Build me a castle forty feet high As he rides by, dear, as he rides by, So I may see him as he rides by. 8. Sentimental Journey (C) Gonna take a sentimental journey, Gonna set my heart at ease. Gonna take a sentimental journey To renew old memories, Got my gad, got my reservation, Spent each dime I could afford. Like a child in wild anticipation, Long to hear that “All aboard.” Seven, that’s the time I leave, at seven. I’ll waitin’ up for Heaven, Countin’ every mile of railroad track That takes me back. Don’t know why my heart should be so yearning. Why did I decide to roam? Gonna take a sentimental journey, Sentimental journey – home. 9. Puff (the Magic Dragon) (G) Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff And brought him strings & sealing wax & other fancy stuff Chorus O- Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail Jackie kept a lookout perched on Puff’s gigantic tail Noble kings & princes would bow whene’er they came Pirate ships would lover their flags when Puff roared out his name Chorus A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys Pained wings & giants’ rings make way for other toys One gray night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more And Puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane Without his lifelong friend, Puff could not be brave So Puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave 10. Carolina In The Morning (C) Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina in the morning. Nothing could be sweeter than when I meet her in the morning. Where the morning glories twine around the door Whispering pretty stories I long to hear once more. Strolling with my girlie where the dew is pearly, early in the morning. Butterflies all flutter up and kiss each little buttercup at dawning. If I had Aladdin’s lamp for only a day I’d make a wish and here’s what I’d say: Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina in the morning 11. Wait Till The Sun Shines, Nellie (G) Wait ‘til the sun shines, Nellie, When the clouds go drifting by. We will be happy, Nellie, Don’t you sigh. Down Lover’s Lane We’ll wander, Sweetheart, you and I. Wail ‘til the sun shines, Nellie, Bye and bye. 12. Jamaica Farewell (C) Down the way Where the nights are gay And the sun shines daily On the mountain top I took a trip on a sailing ship And when I reached Jamaica I made a stop Chorus Well, I’m sad to say I’m on my way Won’t be back for many a day My heart is down My head is turning around I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town Down at the market you can hear Ladies cry out While on their heads they bear Aki rice, salt fish are nice And the rum tastes fine any time of year Chorus Sounds of laughter everywhere And the dancing girls swing to and fro I must declare that my heart is there Though I’ve been from Manitoulin to Mexico Chorus 13. Bye, Bye Blues (D) Bye, Bye, Blues, Bye, Bye, Blues. Bells ring, birds sing, sun is shining No more pining Just we two, smiling ghru Don’t sigh, don’t cry, Bye, Bye, Blues. 14. Bye Bye Boat (D) There goes my sail boat Driftin’ down the bay It dragged its anchor While I was away I set one anchor What a fool I’ve been That darned old Danforth Let me down again Chorus Bye bye boat Bye bye sea-sickness Now it will cost me less I don’t think I’m gonna cry Bye bye boat Bye bye unwanted guests Now there’s a lot less stress Don’t think I’m gonna cry The windbuggers broken And my engine won’t run I’m sitting here cussing This sure ain’t fun But now I’m leaving This junk for good I’m through with boatin’ Should be understood Chorus I’m through with cruisin’ I’m through with boats I’m through with dodgin’ Everything that floats And here’s the reason That I’m so free That damned old sailboat Floated way from me.
