WINDOW PARTS Starting in 2007 Microsoft started changing its window layout from the menu layout to the Ribbon Layout. A typical Ribbon Layout for Word is shown below. The Word Window is more complicated but all Windows contain some of these parts. Quick access toolbar Title Bar Minimize, Restore, Close buttons Tabs Ribbon control Ribbon Rulers Scroll Bar Task Bar Quick Launch Area Status Bar Open Programs Notification Area The dropdown menu under “File” contains the common actions such as Print, Save,etc. Expose it by single left clicking “File” Both Word and Wordpad have similar menus. It will look like this: Quick access toolbar 1 These buttons provide quick access to common commands and can be customized to suit your desires. Single right click in the quick launch area to expose a menu which enables adding/removing buttons to this area. Title bar Shows File name and Program that is open. Ribbon Control This button opens this menu Auto hide removes robbon from view to tyrn ribbon on. single left click in title bar area. Show Tabe turns ribbon off but keeps Tabs opoen. Left click the tab to view the accociated ribbon. Show Tabs and Commands Turns Tavs and ribbon on. Minimize, Restore, Close buttons Removes the file from view, makes it less than or full screen, or closes the file. Tabs Each Tab opens a different ribbon which provides various tool buttons. To see what a button does, hover the pointer over the button and a label will appear. Ruler Shows active horizontal and vertical working area and margins. In Word turn on/off on “View” ribbon. Scroll bars If you can’t see all of a document or web page, there are two scroll bars. One along the right side of the window. This moves the view up and down. Another across the bottom of the window, which moves the view horizontally. To scroll, place the pointer on the slider, hold down the lrft mouse button and move the slider. Task bar This is the bar across the bottom of the screen, and contains the Quick Launch, Start button, and Notification (also Called System tray) Looks like this: Start Buttun Quick Launch Open Programs Notification Area Start Button Opens the Start Menu, Shut down button, and Search Quick Launch Contains icons for Programs. Is accessible at all times. Single left click an icon to open the program. Open Programs area Buttons for open programs are displayed in this area even if the program is minimized. To bring a program forward, single left click it’s button. Notification area These buttons control programs that run in the background when the computer is on. Such programs as antivirus speaker volume, time and date, etc. 2 .
