newsroom History Mar 31, 2015 Porsche at Retro Classics Porsche presented highlights from its museum collection at Retro Classics – from the ancestor of the Boxster through to the street version of the 911 GT1. An overview. The Porsche study „Panamerica“ On his 80th birthday, Ferry Porsche was presented with a ready-to-drive design study based on the 911 Carrera 4. Completed in just a few months and given the name “Panamerica”, this model was also presented at the 1989 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. The design of the horizontal roof structure strongly influenced the subsequent design of the 911 Targa. The study´also provided the inspiration to design a roadster, the future Porsche Boxster. The Porsche 911 GT1 street From 1997 to 1998, the Porsche GT1 was designed mainly for motor racing. In order to obtain a permit to compete in Le Mans in 1997, a total of 21 road version models of the 911 GT1 were buildt to comply with the homologation regulations. Thea were produced by the racing department in Weissach and have the typical front end to the 996 model series. The super sports car is powered by a water-cooled mid-mounted-engine. The Porsche 718 RS Spyder The 718 RS 60 Spyder scored many of its greatest triumphs in endurance races. Joakim Bonnier and Hans Herrmann won the Targa Florio in 1960 with a six-minute lead over a three-litre Ferrari. The 718 RS 60 Spyder, with its characteristic high windscreen and driven by Olivier Gendebien and Hans Herrmann, also scored the first overall victory for Porsche in the USA in the Sebring 12 Hours in 1960. For example the 86 year old made a special trip to Retro Classics to sign autographs and talk about his experiences. Also at the exhibition were experts from Porsche Driving Experience and Porsche Classic. In 2015, a total of 1,500 exhibitors attended the largest classic car exhibition in southern Germany and attracted 87,000 visitors, more than ever before.
