Roberts 3 CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT The Cricket Club experienced a successful 2012/13 season with the First Team again winning the Boland Premier League [50 over competition], as well as the T20 Regional competition. The Team did well at both the USSA tournament and the National Club Championships, although not as well as expected. The Vics side performed well in all competitions – as did Maties II by winning the Boland 1st Division 50-over title and also Maties III - the runners-up in the same competition. I would like to congratulate the coaching staff and all the players for their commitment in ensuring that most of our goals were achieved. A special word of thanks to our Head Coach, Andrew Wylie, in this regard. Andrew was well supported by his assistant coach, Warren Kirsten and all the other coaches. During the season a total number of 72 players were involved in playing cricket at the Club and a further 315 players participated in the Residence League. This was good to see. Steinhoff Dagbreek won the Weekend League by beating Steinhoff Eendrag in the final, while Steinhoff Huis Marais won the Week League. The Maties Women Side again performed well in the Boland League. Several players, namely, Nathanael Christiaans, Stacey Lackay and Yolandi Potgieter represented Boland. A special word of thanks must go to their coach, Mr André Potgieter, for his continued hard work and dedication. The Club’s relationship with the Boland Cricket Board also remained good during the period under review. Congratulations to all the players who represented the Club at National and Provincial levels and in particular Uwe Birkenstock who was named both Boland and South African Student Cricket Player of the Year. Uwe was also selected for the 2013 USSA team. We are proud of his achievements. 1. STEINHOFF INTERNATIONAL The season saw the continuation of meetings with our sponsor, Steinhoff International, to further strengthen the company’s long-term involvement with the Club. My thanks go to the company and its senior executives, Mr Markus Jooste (CEO, Steinhoff International); Mr Danie van der Merwe (COO, Steinhoff International); Mr Derrik Matthew and Mr Ajee 4 Valentine for their keen interest in and extraordinary support to the Club. Thanks also go to many former players, other individuals and corporates, e.g. Gino’s, for their generous financial support. 2. Sidney van Heerden Chairman 8 USSA TOURNAMENT PORT ELIZABETH 3-7 DECEMBER 2012 1. Team Steinhoff International Maties USSA team members were: Lenert Van Wyk Emile Kriek (Capt) Mark Van Heerden Dewald Botha Uwe Birkenstock Viljee Geldenhuis Nathan Roberts James Groom Jean Marias Keegan Biassoni Michael Loubser Herman Smith Riyaad Henry Coach: Andrew Wylie Manager: Warren Kirsten Fitness trainer: Faan Fourie 2. Pre SAU Preparation Due to the time of the year we were fortunate to be able to use club form in the league and amateur form as the basis for our selections. The team, were once again fortunate to have the opportunity to have a “get away” to Ceres before we left for USSA. In Ceres the team took part in an afternoon of development coaching. It was a more than useful exercise, where the players gave back to the local community. There were many team bonding sessions in the two days away and the individuals that left became a stronger group. Unfortunately due to rewrites and deferred exams meant we were three individuals short of creating a harmonious unit. 9 A league fixture the day before we left for USSA was not the best timing but was dealt with as competently as expected from Maties Cricket Club. 3. Transport We flew early on the morning of the 3rd of December from Cape Town International Airport to PE. Our Budget rent a car was picked up at the airport and we made our start to NMMU. The vehicles remained with us for the remainder of the tournament and were returned early on the morning of the 8th of December. 4. Accommodation We stayed in the Hostels at NMMU. The horror stories of the accommodations at NMMU 6 years ago were not repeated. The rooms were clean the food was on time and appetizing. The staff were friendly and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. 5. Financial Report Expenditure: Accommodation: R36 540.00 Transport R72 993.00 Dinner: R2 610.00 Totaal: R112 143.00 Income: Club Sponsorship R100 383.00 SU Subsidy R11 760.00 Totaal: 112 143.00 6. Sponsors Steinhoff International is the official sponsor of the team and was very proudly represented by the Maties team. Our thanks must go to them for the addition of our trainer and Physiotherapist Faan Fourie who added valuable knowledge his specialty fields of Physiology and Physiotherapy. We as the players and management are well aware of the privilege. Thanks to Andre, Sidney and Steinhoff. 7. Functions A Managers and captain’s meeting was held at the Conference facility at NMMU upon arrival. Here the day to day running of the tournament was explained and logistics were discussed. 10 The final Dinner was Held at the St Georges Park. At the function the USSA team was announced and a good time was had by all. Thanks to all that were involved in the event. 8. Results of the tournament and Coaches report The Steinhoff Maties cricket team left early December for Port Elizabeth for the annual USSA cricket week with high expectations and aims to follow up on their previous year’s performance. In reality the tour started off with a number of obstacles that were certainly going to test the resolve and courage of the squad.
