Outrigger Celebrates Outrigger Canoe Club padd lers won their second straight Oahu Hawa iian Canoe Racing Regatta championship on the 4th of July, capturing the 60th annual Walter J. Macfarlane Regatta at Waikiki Beach with a 16 point victory over second place Lanikai. The day started slowly and wound up with a bang as OCC won I0 of the last 18 events, including the women's freshmen, sophomore and senior races, the masters women 35, 45 and 55, the masters men 35 <1 nd 55, and the mixed open. Outrigger amassed 88 points, to Lanikai's 72, Hui Nalu's 50, Healani's 44, Hui Lanakila's 37 and Kailua's 35 in the AA division for larger clubs. The Macfarlane Regatta is the only wave mce on the OHCRA schedule, and features the skill of the various cl ubs' steersmen and women. With flat surf and only a few bumps, OCC's steersmen and women were challenged. She filled in at the last minute for Guido Salmaggi, who missed his first Macfarlane in many years, due to his wife's illness. Stefanic said she has dreamed of singing at the Macfarlane since she was a little girl, and was thrilled to volunteer when she learned Guido wouldn't be making the trip from Florida to sing. Race announcer extra ordinaire Mike Buck was behind the microphone all day announcing the results of the various events, and keeping the Macfarlane trivia alive. This was the 25 th year that Mike has been the announcer at the Macfarlane Regatta. Men's Head Th<mks also goes to Scrappy Lipton who works hard every Coach Kala Judd and Girls year in making arrangements for the Waikiki event. 13 coach Siana Many members of the Macfarlane family were on hand at Hum . the awards ceremony at Duke's after the regatta to honor the winners. Walter Guild, grand nephew of Walter Macfarlane, poured champagne for the winning Senior Men and Women, which were Henlani and Outri gger, respectively. Following the ceremony, paddlers and their families regrouped at the Club for the 4th of July BBQ, entertainment and dancing. The Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association State Championships are scheduled for August 3 in Hilo Bay.
