Australia Square was redeveloped from a tangle of 30 obsolescent properties in the most congested part of downtown Sydney and has literally "opened up" a new, dramatic and exciting Plaza for public enjoyment. Construction commenced on the Pitt Street building in December, 1962 and the whole project was completed in March 1968. The total project cost was $30,000,000. The Sculpture, situated on the George Street frontage, was executed by the internationally famous sculptor, Alexander Calder. The project has been awarded the: Sir John Sulman Medal and Diploma of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects, 1967.
