Institut Suzuki Montreal Advanced Orchestra from Canada Austria & Czech Republic & Germany Salzburg, Vienna, Prague, Munich July 4th – July 15th 2018 Including the SCL Festival 2018 in Vienna | July 6th – 11th 2018 Combine the 5 days SCL Festival Vienna with the great concert halls of the Golden Hall of the Musikverein and the Grand Hall of the Konzerthaus in Vienna together with the famous Smetana Hall in PraGue and wonderful concert experiences in SalzburG and Munich! Day 1 | Wed, 04 July 2018 ARRIVAL => SALZBURG ∙ Arrival at Munich Int. Airport Upon arrival at Munich Int. Airport, you will be met by your touring coach, driver and English speaking tour guide. Transfer from the airport to your accommodation in Salzburg. | WELCOME TO SALZBURG | Art lovers call Salzburg the Golden City of High Baroque; historians refer to it as the Florence of the North, or the German Rome; and music lovers know it as the Festival City -- birthplace of Mozart and home of the world-famous Salzburg Festival. ∙ Check-in at hotel Pension Sonnenhof*** www.pensionsonnenhof.at or similar ∙ Afternoon guided City tour of Salzburg See the Dom, the Festival Hall, St. Peter’s Abbey Church and its graveyards (tomb of Mozart’s sister Nannerl) as well as Mozart’s birthplace (entrance included) in the famous Getreidegasse. Enjoy the marvellous gardens of Mirabell Palace. ∙ Dinner provided ∙ Overnight Salzburg (1) Day 2 | Thu, 05 July 2018 SALZBURG ∙ Breakfast at hotel ∙ In the morning, you will be taken on the Sound of Music Tour Discover Salzburg in the footsteps of “The Sound of Music” and see the locations where the world-famous film was shot. Some of the highlights and film locations that you will see on your tour include: the Gardens of Mirabell Palace, Leopoldskron Palace, Hellbrunn Nonnberg Abbey, St. Gilgen and Lake Wolfgang. ∙ Lunch under own arrangements European Tour including SCL Festival Vienna & Performances in Salzburg, Prague and Munich | 2018 ∙ CONCERT PERFORMANCE (#1) in and around Salzburg (venue to be determined) ∙ Possible Venues: o Mirabell Garden The world –famous Mirabell Gardens were built along a north-south axis and oriented towards the Hohensalzburg Fortress and the Salzburger Dom cathedral. The original gardens were re-modelled according to plans by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach under the reign of Prince Archbishop Johann Ernst Thun in 1689. For "The Sound of Music" fans; this is the place where Maria and the Trapp children sing "Do-Re-Mi" and run through the hedge tunnel. o Werfenweng Festival hall Werfenweng is a charming town approx. 1h away from Salzburg in Pongau District. Located in the valley of Salzach this village offers a Festival hall where several proms, concerts and other events are taking place. ∙ Dinner provided ∙ Overnight Salzburg (2) Day 3 | Fri, 06 July 2018 SALZBURG => VIENNA ∙ Breakfast at hotel & check-out ∙ Departure from Salzburg to Vienna via Wachau Valley and Melk (approx. driving time total 4,5) o Salzburg – Melk ( approx. 2,5h) o Melk – Vienna ( approx. 2h) | Welcome to the UNESCO world heritage, the “Wachau” | Where Culture & Landscape form a Symbiosis – The Wachau The Wachau is considered one of the most enchanting stretches of river valley in Europe. Its much-sung, oft vaunted treasures let us look into the past but also into the future. These treasures have been elevated to UNESCO World Heritage status in their entirety yet are future-oriented, world famous and always committed to modernism. ∙ Optional: o Visit Melk Abbey One of the finest baroque buildings in the world, Melk Abbey and the Stiftskirche (abbey church) overlooking the Danube river, adjoining the Wachau valley, a UNESCO-World-heritage site. The rock-strewn bluff where the abbey now stands overlooking the river was the seat of the Babenbergs, who ruled Austria from 976 until the Hapsburgs took over. Melk is still a working abbey, and you might see black-robed Benedictine monks going about their business or students rushing out of the gates. European Tour including SCL Festival Vienna & Performances in Salzburg, Prague and Munich | 2018 ∙ Check-in at the Global Village Hotel JUFA or at the Austria Trend Eventhotel Pyramide – both official SCL FESTIVAL accommodations! Many of the participants of the Summa Cum Laude Festival will either be staying at the Austria Trend Eventhotel Pyramide or the JUFA Vienna City – creating a wonderful international atmosphere and many opportunities for cultural exchange activities! The “Hotel JUFA Vienna City” is located in the heart of the Simmering district and the “Austria Trend Eventhotel Pyramide” lies in the South of Vienna. Both accommodations include spacious multi-bedded rooms with private en-suite bathrooms as well as a delicious daily buffet breakfast. Both are very well equipped for music groups, with seminar rooms, festival halls etc. where the young musicians get the possibility to have rehearsals & play music with each other – perfect ambiances for creating long- lasting intercultural musical friendships! ∙ Lunch under own arrangements ∙ In the afternoon attend the welcome ceremony of the Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival There will be a keynote speech and musical welcome! The true focus of the Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival is to offer the participating international youth the opportunity to create lasting connections across all boarders. Music is the language we all share, and this global event will build bridges between the many young participants. The friendships that result will have far reaching benefits, now and in the future. ∙ SCL Festival Welcome Dinner provided ∙ Overnight Vienna (3) Day 4 | Sat, 07 July 2018 VIENNA | SCL FESTIVAL DAY | ∙ Breakfast at hotel ∙ Morning guided city tour of Vienna with English-speaking local guide (Exact time will be depending on the SCL festival schedule, tour might also take place on Tuesday, 10th July!) Start your guided city tour of Vienna including Ring Avenue, the Hofburg Palace, the Opera House, St. Stephen‘s Cathedral, Mozart‘s „Figaro House“, City Hall and visit the famous Schönbrunn Palace (entrance included) European Tour including SCL Festival Vienna & Performances in Salzburg, Prague and Munich | 2018 Category: Choirs Choirs may choose to take part in the SCL Competition or in the SCL Celebration. SCL Competition For the Competition choirs are classified into the following sub-categories: ñ Mixed Choirs ñ Treble (female) Choirs ñ Male Choirs ñ Children’s Choirs (boys and girls up to the age of 12) In the Competition choirs take part in the following program: ñ The opening ceremony in St. Stephen’s Cathedral ñ 2 workshops at the University of Music and one additional lecture ñ 2 additional concerts in and around Vienna ñ 1 performance before the jury in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein ñ If chosen by the jury: concert in the evening Gala Winners’ Concert in the Konzerthaus ñ Closing ceremony in Vienna’s Town Hall During the competition the participants are required to present the following music pieces before the jury within a time period of 15 - 20 minutes: ñ compulsory pieces (see below) ñ one piece by a composer of the ensemble’s home country ñ additional piece(s) required in order to reach the minimum playing time, to be freely chosen. The choir may be accompanied by a piano player supplied by the choir. Pianos will be supplied in the Musikverein and the University of Music (workshops). The tuning of the pianos at the Musikverein, the Konzerthaus and the University of Music will be 443 Hz. Along with the application, applicants inform Via Musica of the pieces presented with the accompaniment of a piano. No solo pieces are allowed. Evaluation Criteria The SCL Jury evaluates the ensembles upon a transparent catalogue of criteria. The following criteria are observed and rated ñ Technical criteria = intonation, choir sound, rhythm, dynamics. (A maximum of 14 points can be reached) ñ Musical-artistic criteria = interpretation, style (Max 14 points) ñ Overall artistic impression (Max 6 points) ñ Program selection (Max 6 points) Depending on the rating of the Jury the choir and its participants will be awarded with a certificate which lists the result: Outstanding, Excellent, Good or Participated. Outstanding: 30 - 40 Points Excellent: 20 - 29 Points Good: 10 - 19 Points Participated: 0 - 9 Points The choirs will be provided with a summarized feedback from the whole jury, the result of the competition (Outstanding, Excellent, Good or Participated) and the rank in their category. However, the points and the individual points of the respective criteria or the individual jury member will not be revealed. European Tour including SCL Festival Vienna & Performances in Salzburg, Prague and Munich | 2018 SCL Celebration In the Celebration choirs take part in the following program: ñ The opening ceremony in St. Stephen’s Cathedral ñ 2 workshops at the University of Music and one additional lecture ñ 2 additional concerts in and around Vienna ñ 1 performance in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein ñ Closing ceremony in Vienna’s Town Hall ñ Gala Winner´s Concert ticket included Within a time period of max 20 minutes the participants may present their freely chosen program on stage. The choir may be accompanied by a piano player supplied by the choir. Pianos will be supplied in the Musikverein and the University of Music (workshops). The tuning of the pianos at the Musikverein and the University of Music will be 443 Hz. Along with the application, applicants inform the Artistic Office of the Festival which music pieces will be presented with an accompanying piano. Join all the participating ensembles one more time at the Gala Winner´s Concert in the Great Hall of the Konzerthaus. A true celebration of the individual achievements of the past few festival days as well as a celebration of international friendships that have been established over the course of the SCL Festival.
