Women's HIV/AIDS Awareness Day Set Dad Turns in Teen Purse

SAM HORTON INSTRUCTIONAL SERVICES CENTER DEDICATED More than 60 people attended an event to dedicate a school district building in honor of the late Dr. Sam Horton. The building, located at 2909 N. 40th St., officially was dedicated as the Dr. Sam J. Horton Instructional Services Center. The dedication pro­ gram included words from School Board Member Carol Kurdell, Superintendent MaryEllen Elia, and NAACP President Carolyn Collins. Several members of the Horton family were in attendance. Dr. Horton spent 42 years as an educator in Hillsborough County Public Schools, working as a teacher and principal and finishing as the General Director of secondary education. He retired from the school district in 1991 and remained active in education issues. He dedicated his life's work to the desegregation of schools. Dr. Horton later served 10 years as president of the local branch of the NAACP. Dr. Horton passed away April7, 2009. Family members in attendance included: Michael Warren, Exley Warren, Sr., Sheila Warren, Exley Warren, Jr. (rear), Dwayne Horton, Wanda Horton, Cliff Horton and Jason Horton.
