JULY - 2014 NUTRITION BULLETIN JAN-JUNE 2014 NUTRITION WORKING GROUP SINDH Situation Overview The Sindh Nutrition Working Group partners continued nutrition ser‐ vices for the populations affected by severe and moderate malnutri‐ tion. Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) pro‐ gram is being implemented in districts Tharparkar, Sanghar, TMK, Badin, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Kamber, and Kashmore, Umerkot. There is increased focus across the NWG partners in strengthening the Infant and Young Child Feeding component of the CMAM pro‐ gram, to complement the treatment of acute malnutrition by Supplementary feeding Programs (SFPs), Outpatient Therapeutic Feeding Programs (OTPs) and Stabilization Centers (SCs). Tharparkar drought response is ongoing with addition of 24 CMAM sites of PPHI, now HANDS and PPHI both partner are working in 44 UC of Tharparkar. Midyear review and EPRP workshop were held in June, similarly IYCF and CMAM ToT trainings were held in the month of May and June in those two TOT workshops , 50 health professionals were trained as master trainers . Similarly NWG coordination meetings were held in January , February and April 2014. These meetings aimed to stay connected with NWG partners and address the issues and provision of immediate support to CMAM program. Emergency Preparedness and Response Planning (EPRP) Workshop Nutrition EPRP workshop was held at UNICEF Karachi office on 18th June‐ the workshop mainly discussed /planned roles and responsi‐ bility of all Nutrition partners, contingency planning, beneficiaries calculation, NiE basic concepts, nutrition surveillance in emergency, coordinated assessment / nutrition needs assessment, and simulation exercise (Group work). Contingency PCAs Contingency PCAs are formulated with partners and soon to be signed by Unicef country office UNICEF Partners Midyear review: WFP/UNICEF joint midyear review organized at UNICEF office to identify achievements, results and challenges of CMAM programme, partners/district wise update was presented by each partners and critically reviewed by Provincial Nutrition cell (DoH) , UNICEF and WFP. Information Management NIS refresher training for 15 representative of NGO partners and provincial HMIS cell and nutrition cell conducted in April 2013, Monthly reporting matrix have been revised and data collection will be start form July 2014. IYCF indicator and reporting matrix has prepared. Tharparkar update - UNICEF and WFP supported CMAM intervention are benefiting more then 50,000 children under CMAM pro‐ gram. Tharparkar Trends Among them 3,173 children are SAM and 6,697 children are MAM, while 5,082 PLW found with MAM status in 20 UC of Mithi and Diplo talukas from march to June 2014. Drought Watch and overall Surveillance • NWG is closely monitoring the expected drought situation in different districts of Sindh as indicated in this map. • Most of drought prone or expected districts CMAM program is function- al and in case of any deterioration in situation , it is discussed during EPRP workshop with NWG partners to deploy immediate response through availa- ble resources kept for contingency . • Districts with desert terrain i.e. Tharparkar, Sanghar , Umerkor, Badin have already functional CMAM program in union councils as detailed under Tharparkar: 44 UCs (fully covered) Umerkot: 27 UCs (fully covered) Sanghar: 9 UCs Badin: 7 UCs Source: http://www.pmd.gov.pk/ndmc/index.htm SMART Nutrition and mortality Survey Through UNICEF technical and ECHO financial support, SMART Nutrition and mortality surveys were conducted in Tharparkar, Sanghar and Kamber Shehdadkhot districts of Sindh, Pakistan . General Objective The overall objective of the nutrition survey was to measure the extent and severity of acute malnutrition in children aged 6‐ 59 months in Tharparkar, Sanghar and Kamber Shahdadkhot districts of Sindh province Specific Objectives To estimate the prevalence of acute and chronic malnutrition among children 6‐59 months of age. • To assess crude mortality rate (CMR) and under five mortality rates (U5MR). • To assess morbidity, immunization coverage (measles and BCG), and Vitamin A supplementation coverage among 6-59 months children. • To examine the population’s access to, and use of, improved water, sanitation and hygiene .
