The standard in the top flight, and indeed throughout the league, was high and there were some tight finishes throughout the divisions. We start this season with two more teams giving full divisions for all but the Fourth. Nationally our representative teams failed to achieve any successes and it is anticipated that, this season, the association will be rationalising entries. We have lost several long-standing members of the management committee. John Callcut resigned as Chairman in the Spring and Tony Laws stood in until the AGM. John’s overseeing of the anniversary events will be long remembered as well as his diplomatic skills tested on too many occasions. Graham Watts completed a long stint as Tournament Officer and, given the difficulties he has encountered over the years, his boots will be very hard to fill. Trevor Free also decided that he had spent enough time cleaning trophies and he has passed on the baton as Trophy Steward. Richard Carpenter, as Handicap Cup Officer, together with his family organised a very tight competition evidenced by the Final being decided in the final game. Brian Hartles has also left the committee and his wise counsel will be missed. So welcome to the new members of the committee. Carole Ingram has taken over as General Secretary from me, Nick Gould has become Vice Chairman and also Handicap Cup Officer, Fred Florance is the new Trophy Steward and Chris Hazlehurst the new Tournament Officer. Hugh McKee and Peter Palmer have joined the committee as additional members and John Callcut fills the new role of Development Officer. The other remaining members of the committee continue to give countless hours to the Association, John Robinson as Treasurer has faced problems which I am sure he did not anticipate, Bob Hammond, the KO Cup Officer, remains a dependable rock and the hours that Tony Laws puts in as Coaching Officer are phenomenal. These together with Phil Snelson who continues to manage the league’s website deserve all our thanks. And that brings me to the message that I wrote in the End of Season Report. There has been a growing feeling amongst the officers that the association members take them for granted and, indeed, expect them to paper over their own inefficiencies. Well this is the season when it all changes otherwise there may not be a full committee next season. So a list of actions, which if done, will make everyone’s life a lot simpler. a) Keep the Match Secretary informed of postponements (see below) b) Get tournament entries in by the deadline c) Return polished trophies, from Christmas on, to the Centre d) Accept whatever Handicaps are given with good grace Unfortunately, since the AGM, the Match Secretary, Neil Harden, has resigned. I am hoping he has a change of heart and re-joins the committee but in the meantime I will be the Match Secretary. The work that Neil has done over the years has been phenomenal and I am sure that all association members will echo my thanks for his hard work. By far the easiest way of getting results to me is by the ‘enter a scorecard’ facility on the website. Not only does it update the tables but it also comes straight through to me. This negates the need for a stamp and envelope and also provides you with the original score- sheet for your own records. Last June we had another successful Presentation Evening which will probably be the last at the Corporation Club. Maria Taylor-Woodward who, together with mum Lesley and the rest of the Challoner club, have run the evening for twenty years has decided to finish. As with Neil, I thank the Challoner crew from all Association members for their efforts over the years. Any ideas over venue and format for next June’s Presentation Evening will be gratefully received. Finally two issues came through at the AGM. The need for all teams and clubs to conduct themselves within the spirit of the game and not just the rules. Principally the management of the selection of teams to ensure the playing field is kept as level as possible. The AGM also requested that the Management Committee do not take the initiative over foul serving but encourage umpires to exercise their duties as normal. Hopefully next season the Chairman will be able to be more positive in his/her notes. Enjoy the game.
