It was a historic event for the department as Sir Cook was in India after 46 years and was kind enough to make time to come to SPA during his very short. More than 300 students, faculty, professionals and alumni attended the presentation. Professor Mohammed Shaheer, well known landscape architect and the alumnus of SPA introduced Sir Peter Cook with a brief of his contributions to modern architecture as a founder of Archigram. The event terminated with the tea in the open air theater of the department facilitating one to one interaction with Sir Peter Cook. Sir Peter Cook is an eminent and visionary architect, planner from UK and founder of Archigram. He is among the few architects awarded knightship by the queen of England. He has worked in England, Austria, Australia, Germany and North-Europe. He lecture titled ‘Nose to Nose’ was about the confrontation of idea to idea in his work; about the character of individual people as they affect it; and also the preference he has for nose shaped elements. The presentation had two parts, first part was titled- ‘Nose to Nose’ and the second part titled- ‘Sniffing the breeze in Queensland Australia’, CRAB architecture building Bond university 2010-2014. The first part outlined his journey of exploration of the design of towers over the last 3 decades exploring his various ideas and perceptions of a city, also sharing the related competition entry and completed projects. In the second part of the presentation he focused on the recently completed university building in Australia, designed by CRAB. He illustrated several aspects of the project in both its conception and execution, such as rationalizing the scoop, percolation, sniffing. The highlight of the talk was the in- depth discussion on his process, substantiated by the myriad illustrations, through which he shared his way of visualizing power. Some of the projects shared during the lecture were: Birmingham New Street, UK, 2009; Kunsthaus Graz (aka 'The Friendly Alien') in Graz, Austria (2000); Taiwan Tower international competition(2010); and Verbania Town Theatre (by Lake Maggorie), Italy (2006). His hand drawings especially were a great inspiration for all of us. His vivid and futuristic vision encouraged e participants to look at architecture and design differently.
