William W. Joyce Richard Beach 6 4 Introducing Canada The National Consortium for Teaching Canada (NCTC) was founded in 1988 by a group of academics who believe wholeheartedly in the importance of a professional outreach organization dedicated to helping teachers gain an understanding of Canada. Today, the NCTC is comprised of thirteen college and university Canadian studies programs throughout the United States. The NCTC's mission is to capture the imagination and attention of K-12 teachers, students, media-resource specialists, businesspeople, and the general public by communicating to those audiences the most recent research, themes, and ideas about Canada and its place in the world. Introducing Canada is made possible by the generous contributions of Bridgewater State College, Michigan State University, the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, the University of Maine, the University of Vermont, the University of Washington, and Western Washington University. Its precursor was the 1985 Canada in the Classroom, edited by William W. Joyce and published by National Council for the Social Studies. Because that publication is now dated, the NCTC decided to write a new book represent- ing the latest insights and trends concerning Canada and that country's role and relations in the world. Introducing Canada also offers innovative sug- gestions about how to incorporate Canada into the social studies. Since the publication of Canada and the Classroom in 1985 and the founding of the NCTC in 1988, our organization has maintained a close relationship with NCSS. That role has expanded to include regular participa- tion by the NCTC
