On March 11, 1889, the California legislature divided Los Angeles County and created Orange County as a separate political entity. This act resulted in the creation of Orange County’s own office of education. The Orange County Department of Education was founded in 1889 with John P. Greeley serving as the first county superintendent of Schools.
