In a building that can incorporate the latest knowledge of healing architecture. A building that encourages play, colla- boration and development. It is not simply a matter of architecture. It is just as much culture. A culture based on the child’s approach to the world. The curiosity of the child and desire to learn is the starting point for our re- search. The joy of creating together, sharing ideas and discoveries is the principle for our knowledge sharing. And the child’s need for care and security is the basis for our treatment. THE CORE STORY 7 FIVE SPECIFIC DESIGN PRINCIPLES We want to revolutionize the patient’s experience before, during and after treatment. The ambition is that these princip- les should govern both the building and the organization. DESIGN PRINCIPLES THE WORLD’S BEST TREATMENT The patient first. To the last. For many years, we have been working according to an internal concept, which is quite fundamental: “It’s the outcome for the patient that counts”. This will also be the case in the future. But the goal is to revolutionize the overall patient experience before, during and after treatment. Starting from the vision of the building, an innovation process has been conducted in close collaboration between patients, relatives, leaders and employees. The innovation process has resulted in some fundamental design principles for all good hospital buildings and some specific principles for family hospitals. The ambition is that these principles should govern both the building and the organization. WORLD’S BEST HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES INTEGRATED PLAY DESIGNED FOR EVERYDAY LIFE SEE ME, ASK ME, LET ME THE GOOD JOURNEY CLEAR ZONES BASELINE: INTERNET, FRESH AIR, NATURAL LIGHT, EXPECTATIONS FOR GOOD PARKING OPPORTUNITIES, ETC. A HOSPITAL BY 2020 FIVE FUNDAMENTAL DESIGN PRINCIPLES 11 INTEGRATED PLAY CHILDREN DO NOT STOP PLAYING ”SIMPLY” BECAUSE THEY FALL ILL Playing must therefore become an integrated part of the design, life and experience. It is not just about playgrounds and play breaks, but about integration throughout the entire patient treatment process. The child’s acceptance of illness and treatment can for instance be helped along with games, where the child is to treat someone else or a toy animal. There must be a common thread of play throughout the entire stay at BørneRiget. We intend to take play seriously. We will research – and practice – the link between play and recovery with staff, families and patients. FIVE SPECIFIC DESIGN PRINCIPLES INTEGRATED PLAY 13 DESIGNED FOR EVERYDAY LIFE WE MUST REMOVE THE FEELING THAT LIFE IS PUT ON HOLD, WHEN YOU ARE HOSPITALIZED Daily life is the basis of our reality. Hospitalisation must not lead to a sense of stagnation. The world outside and the world inside must keep step. Family rooms should enable ordinary routines and activities to be continued. Children can go to school and see their friends. The family can cook and enjoy food, they can easily go outside to get some fresh air or just sit on a couch and watch TV together. These are small things, but they hold on to the everyday life and thus reality. FIVE SPECIFIC DESIGN PRINCIPLES DESIGNED FOR EVERYDAY LIFE 15 SEE ME, ASK ME, LET ME CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS NEED RECOGNITION AS MUCH AS ADULTS The feeling of influence on your own situation can and must be stimulated in as many ways as possible. It has to do with strengthening and supporting the patient’s own resources and competencies. Therefore, we make use of the knowledge held by patients and families in the planning of the building. But the involvement does not end with the planning. In the course of treatment and daily life in BørneRiget, we will ensure that patients and families are heard, consulted and their insights used to validate solutions in an ongoing process of dialogue. FIVE SPECIFIC DESIGN PRINCIPLES SEE ME, ASK ME, LET ME 17 THE GOOD JOURNEY THE PATIENT’S JOURNEY MUST BE A GOOD EXPERIENCE FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE END We want to create a patient journey that starts well, is coordinated, and is always felt as moving forward. It requires a good first impression of BørneRiget, which already starts at home with the call for and plan- ning of the first visit. The patient must experience a joint, coordinated process without complicated transitions between sections and clinics, centers and sectors. It will not only be groundbreaking architecture, but also a whole new logistics and functionality that will help minimize waiting time. FIVE SPECIFIC DESIGN PRINCIPLES THE GOOD JOURNEY 19 CLEAR ZONES A BUILDING THAT ALLOWS INTUITIVE WAYFINDING Architecture, technology, materials and color choices that tell you what is required of you, what you are allowed to do and not allowed to do. The building should guide the users to a greater extent than signs. Consistency and clarity reassure users that they are in good hands and can relax. It makes patients feel more at ease in their interaction with the family, staff and other patients. FIVE SPECIFIC DESIGN PRINCIPLES CLEAR ZONES 21 TREATMENT OF THE FUTURE BørneRiget will consolidate all child patient care at Rigshospitalet in an area dedicated to children aged between 0 and 18. Maternity wards and beds for pregnant women and women in labour are to be grouped together in order to achieve logical treatment synergy and exchange of experience.
