Through knowledge of the past, we can adapt and understand our present environment . Intense research into Eastern Illinois University athletic history illustrates the many individual achievements and respective accomplishments which enhance the credibility of the institution . Because of the record-breaking performances, the tradition of excellence is attained. These many honors and winning traditions will communicate to prospective athletes the greatness which awaits them at Eastern. Through an appreciation for athletic excellence, today 's students, faculty and alumni can better appreciate the quality and caliber of athletics. Through outstanding performances in competition, the athletes will also excel in other endeavors . The collection of data into one source can serve as a recruiting tool for future athletes or coaches who may come to Eastern Illinois University . Additionally, this study is a public relations project of the Speech Communication Department and is intended to inform individuals interested in joining the Panther Club of the high-caliber program which is offered. Also, this documented data will serve as undisputed authority in deter- A{hletic communication 2 mining future nominees selected for Hall of Fame membership. This study is composed of 14 chapters; an introduction, 12 chapters of men's sports since 1899, and a conclusion . Men's athletics were selected because in the 90-years of competition, the results have never been compiled into one paper . It is hoped this endeavor will encourage a future student to undertake the researching of the women 's program . In undertaking a research proj ect of this magnitude , one factor is evident : the availability of old and ccurate documents were often hard to find . Also, results of events in recent history have a way of disappearing , and efforts must be made to save these documents . Sources include the Eastern Illinois Normal School Classbook; the Eastern Illinois Normal School W'apper; the Eastern Illinois University Warbler; the Normal School News; the Teachers ' College News; the Charleston Courier News; the Coles County Daily Times, the Charleston (IL) Times-Courier; sports brochures , varsity scorebooks, physical education handbooks; personal files and papers of former Eastern Illinois University coaches , and personal interviews with present and former persons associated with the University . The information contained in this paper will also be helpful in future broadcasts of the mass media . These
