MATT RODRIQUEZ Matthew “Matt” Rodriquez started in state service in 1979 as a Graduate Legal Assistant with the California Coastal Commission while he was still in law school. He was an Associate Governmental Program Analyst at the Governor’s Office of Planning and Research in 1981 and 1982 during the end of Governor Jerry Brown’s second term and then left to work in City Attorney Offices in first Livermore and then Hayward. Matt joined the California Department of Justice in 1987 as a Deputy Attorney General in the Land Law Section. In 1999, he was promoted to Senior Assistant Attorney General by Attorney General Bill Lockyer and later was appointed Chief Assistant Attorney General for the Public Rights Division by Attorney General Jerry Brown. After serving briefly as Acting Chief Deputy Attorney General for Attorney General Kamala Harris in 2011, he was appointed by Governor Brown as Secretary for the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA). As the CalEPA Secretary, he was responsible for overseeing and coordinating the operations of the California Air Resources Board, the State Water Resources Control Board, the Department of Toxic Substances Control, the Department of Pesticide Regulation, the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment and the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery. In 2019, Matt returned to the Department of Justice and was reappointed as Chief Assistant Attorney General for the Public Rights Division by Attorney General Xavier Becerra. He is currently serving as Acting Chief Deputy Attorney General. He received his juris doctorate from U.C. Hasting College of the Law and a bachelor’s degree in History from U.C. Berkeley.
