Spring 2020 Newsletter Iron Arrow® Honor Society THE HIGHEST HONOR ATTAINED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI A Message from the Chief Happy New Year! As we all enjoyed time with family and friends over the Holiday Season, I hope everyone also took some time to reflect on this past year. If you have yet to do so, wherever you may be in the world, please take some time to reflect on the impact you are making on your respective environment; as well as what you have done and continue to do for the Miami Hurricane family. Photo by J.C. Ridley (IA’02) As I reflect on the past semester and the year 2019, I have much appreciation for the Tribe and my fellow Officers, Emma and Cachay. Whether it was spending the day at the Miccosukee reservation for American 2019-2020 OFFICERS Indian Day or trying to dig out the stuck UHaul at initiation, there are many Iron Arrow memories that have shaped my experience here at The U. I’ll be forever grateful for the lessons learned through both the highs DEWAYNE N. WASHINGTON II and the lows. Whether it is when The Miami Hurricane published an article that misrepresented our use CHIEF of the gifts provided to us by the Miccosukee, or when we revealed our new plaque on the second floor of 919.600.0856 the Shalala Student Center, lessons are learned and bonds are forever created. The impact of Iron Arrow [email protected] forever lives on at the University of Miami. EMMA M. LAM SON OF CHIEF As I mentioned in the Fall newsletter we must continue the work of increasing the presence of the Tribe 305.778.6156 and increasing the educatiion of those on campus and in the community. Continuing to provide educational [email protected] moments will be critical in order to reverse some of the existing misconceptions. This past semester I think we did a positive job of doing so. For example, we participated in the Homecoming reunion tents where Iron CACHAY L. BYRD Arrow members were able to gather, and the public had the opportunity to ask the questions that would MEDICINE WOMAN 786.348.3451 have gone unanswered otherwise. As previously mentioned, we also spent time with the Miccosukee at [email protected] American Indian Day and their special opening ceremonies where many people from the greater Miami community and political leaders from Canada attended; therefore allowing us to showcase the strong COUNCIL OF ELDERS relational ties we have with the Miccosukee. JOHANN A. ALI CHRISTIAN DIEZ In 2020, Emma, Cachay and I, have activities planned to keep the Tribe on our current path; to facilitate the DAVID McDONALD, Sr. continuous positive impact of Iron Arrow here at the University of Miami. I look forward to the day where BRANDON T. MITCHELL there is a constant understanding of who we are, where we come from, and what we stand for. I hope to ELIZABETH M. RODRIGUEZ MICHELLE A. WILLIAMS, Esq. see everyone in the new decade, especially at the first Business meeting being held on January 28th, when we will have a more formal discussion and announcements about the upcoming events the Officers FACULTY ADVISOR have planned for Spring 2020. WINSTON WARRIOR [email protected] Lastly, the impact of the Tribe steadily depends on us welcoming people from all areas of the University into the Tribe. Therefore, please start thinking about people who are deserving of the Highest Honor MICCOUSKEE LIASION Attained at the University of Miami and present them at Selections on February 29th.
